All the senators agreed to pass electronic transmission after a closed-door session, but when we came back to the Senate chamber, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Mohammed Tahir moved a motion to remove electronic transmission and retain transfer which is in the 2022 electoral act, and immediately, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau seconded him and Senate President Akpabio immediately put it to a vote and they passed it. In today’s Nigeria we have 140M connected to the internet. The total number of registered voters is about 93M from the last election. We are not even asking you to transmit the results of the 93M, we are saying transmit the results of the 177 polling units electronically.”

The Senate has not removed any means of transmission. If you want to use a bicycle to carry your votes from one polling unit to the ward centre, do so. If you want to use your phone to transmit, do so. If you want to use your iPad, do so. All we said was that we should remove the word ‘real time,’ because if you say real time and there is grid failure and the network is not working, when you go to court somebody will say it ought to have been real time. That was what we said. We left the burden for INEC to determine the mode of transmission of votes. - Senate President Akpabio insists that the Senate did not remove electronic transmission of election results, clarifying that lawmakers only questioned the requirement for real-time transmission

INEC and civil society groups were fully involved in the process. All retreats concluded that electronic transmission was the best option for Nigeria. Any claim of deviation is a misunderstanding of what was collectively passed.
