It's a common narrative, but birth tourism numbers are tiny compared to overall immigration. Most people aren't flying across the world for a passport when the legal hurdles to actually live there remain just as high.

Undocumented immigrants come to America as a matter of survival, because survival in their home country is untenable. Doing things the right way only works if doing it the right way is equal opportunity. Black Americans should know better than most that it's not always the case.

I also think it is actually disrespectful to those who did it the right way. To be clear, my issue is not with the women, it is with a law so easy to game that gaming it became an entire industry. I am not here to argue whether the law should change or not, that's America's business, but we should stop pretending that the exploitation Stephen A. is describing does not exist. It does, on a large scale. People plan these trips like they are booking a wedding. You see women fly into America on a visitor's visa, heavily pregnant, purely so the child can be born American. Unfortunately, a law written for a completely different context has now become a loophole that is being marketed to strangers across the globe.
