Is card restoration good or bad for the hobby?

Would be cool to be grading companies to still grade them and just mark them as restored.

It’s not a problem if you buy a vintage card you are looking to grade and the guy selling it has restored it yet selling undisclosed?

I think with how much scummy stuff grading companies do in general, how much profits they make, and how they treat employees and all the other crap they do, I think someone working on a card and getting a grade on it because they made it look better is much lower on the problem scale if that makes sense. I buy a card for the card, not the grade. So if I saw a PSA 9 irl and liked it, bought it. And then learned it had been cleaned before, it wouldnt matter to me because I had already looked at the card itself and justified the purchase AND I liked the condition of it. Hope that makes sense 😅 But if someone cleaned it, and I ASKED if it had been cleaned and they lied and said no, thats a different story. Like if I saw marks on it and I ask about it kinda thing. But this has never happened.

Makes sense man. And I agree on the scummy scale as well. I couldn’t believe the prices some stores tried to sell 30th products as well. Everyone milking the market for everything it’s worth. Reminds me of NFT projects extracting until the cow is dry. 😂

Considering that PSA can pickup on a restored card and send it back ungraded I am leaning to not good

The other issue is buyers who buy something altered and undisclosed

Bad for grading, good for personal collection, bad for selling without disclosing the restoration work as they can detect it and won’t grade it

Imo if the card only has minor wear (a few scuffs or slight whitening)

Issue imo is people selling these cards undisclosed. Cleaning a card I think is fine. Even pressing it. But applying products and significant altering is not great if it’s undisclosed to the buyer.

It's fine, but it's like coin restoration - needs to be done right and most of the time it's a bad idea and noticable. And if restored, it should be labeled so before being sold
