I spoke with a health inspector about this once and it is 100% factual. Statistically people who wear gloves in kitchens wash their hands less, increasing cross contamination. Have seen it with my own eyes many times.

He's absolutely correct. I see people wearing gloves cross-contaminating everything as they go. I'm constantly washing my hands and cleaning as I cook. I tactically prepare and handle food and equipment as I go to avoid cross-contamination.

I agree, just wash your hands unless you got some fungus or nasties going on, in which case, food prep isn’t for you. Sorry.

That's just one aspect. Here's another- 1. They DO NOT have material safety data sheets to tell you what they're made of. 2. They melt at 250 degrees. Exposing them to any higher temp causes them to degrade, and the chemicals leech not only into your skin, but into your food.

I have never understood people wearing gloves when making food in their own homes. Outside of dealing with peppers and the like- just wash your hands!

Been in kitchens for 20+ years. It's truth. Gloves are for specific tasks and injuries. Keeping food hands on and in clean order is the only way. Having great hand-washing is pertinent. If we can only get the medical industry to wash their hands like a well oiled kitchen now...

@FerfeLaBat He’s right. Go ahead and wear gloves if serving other people in a buffet and you’re not using utensils or something but definitely not while cooking or preparing food.

Food that isn’t going to be cooked - sandwich prep, salad prep, etc - wear gloves. Otherwise no need.

It drives me crazy when I see people wearing gloves in the grocery store, then digging through their purse and touching their phone with them. Like, y’all are stoopid

I’m not a chef, and have never worked in a commercial kitchen, but this chef is talking absolute common sense. You will definitely wash ungloved hands more often, and of course have better feel.

He's right plus it's a lot easier to cross-contaminate. Always follow local ordinances. 😄🙃

😂😂😂 dude doesn’t understand why people with OCD wear gloves, actually wash their hands as many times as they would if they weren’t wearing gloves . 😂😂😂 yes I wash my gloved hands while I’m working in the kitchen. 👍😑

Those gloves are often contaminated at origin. Don't do this.

Any real chef has dry, chapped hands from washing them continuously during the shift. No gloves needed

I don't like touching any raw meat or fish bare-handed, I don't have extremely long nails but I can't stand getting "stuff" under my nails, and depending on what I'm preparing I change to new gloves 4, 5, 6 times rather than a nail scrubber with antibacterial soap 6x 🤷‍♀️

Also you put the gloves on with ungloved hands so anything that was on your hands is now on the outside of your gloves and thus touching the food anyway. When you are touching hot foods or plates with the gloves they get melty and don’t fit properly, increasing the chances that you will get hurt by dropping something, or cutting yourself.

I've seen sweat from the gloved hand dribble or moreso pour into the food, especially around Bain Marie in hot area's. Disgusting

As a chef this is bs he doesn’t know what he is talking about you should wash your hands and change gloves often not to cross contaminate.

Thank goodness someone said it. Grosses me out. You were born with hands. You are not diseased I guess so don't be afraid of your body.

I'm only cooking for guests/family, and I only wear gloves for things like handling cut jalapenos. Completely agree about not being able to feel if something is on your hands with gloves on and cross-contamination.

Rule of thumb is you're supposed to change them every 20 mins or after handling something like chicken. Not needed in your own kitchen

Gloves should only be worn when handling raw meat or assembling food. They must be changed every time you switch tasks to prevent cross-contamination, and you should wash your hands with each glove change. Food safety and raising kids are the areas I’m knowledgeable in.

Aye it’s true. As an operator watching glove use and having to remind staff to change your gloves. They get “glove head”

If you can’t feel something on gloves, and cut with your fingers uncurled, you aren’t cooking anyway. 100% safer than wiping your fingers on the same towel that is often the alternative in kitchens. At home, you have a sink a foot away, in pro you have 100 gloves to use
