@piq9117 Forgetting implies they knew how to at soms point

only way the year of the linux system becomes reality

When did they learn?

I made a similar prediction back in June. I don't think it makes sense for them to stay in the OS building game anymore, since they clearly suck at it.

So because Wine is getting better, that means Microsoft has forgotten how to build OS's? I don't see the connection.

I’ve been thinking along these lines before. MS has been moving toward open source for a while and .NET is now cross-platform as is Powershell and probably others. They’re moving more into online services including Azure than selling software at this point. Games could be run with Wine. I could see them converting Windows to be based on Linux similar to how MacOS is based on BSD.

the full stream on youtube ? or not yet

Soon

the more features for wsl they make the more they convert to linux

Wine is awesome. Been using it for 25 years. When it worked it worked great, some apps were a pain to get installed or didn't work at all. It's gotten much better over time. In most cases it ran faster on Linux. I don't think I could have made the direct jump from win without it.

That ending was pretty impressive ngl

With the wsl now doing GUI stuff, at some point it might outgrow the older window kernel, one problem with the WSL though it's that it is not as fast as working on linux proper there are lags in the CLI

Yes, those prerequisites are there HOWEVER, MS owns a lot of marketshare, and would only do that if they were losing power in key areas. So long as Windows reigns supreme in the markets they are targeting, they won't wrap alternatives until absolutely necessary.

Bold of you to assume they ever knew how

Developing a web browser is such a mess with so many standards and security issues that it looks reasonable to share some of their resources... What I can see coming in the future is the deprecation of their own C++ compiler in favor of C-Lang...

Not only WSL but there’s MSYS2 with different environments (UCRT, CLANG64…). These are almost Linux system. Like the package manager it’s literally pacman (Arch)… Not even kidding ^^

Lmao, for a while. The reason why only every second windows is good is because they can't create a product internally that the community doesn't hate with a passion, and they learn from the outrage and make a good OS. They really should just open source it...

Microsoft isn't a tech company anymore, it's just riding dirty on user data and letting AI (Jesus) take the wheel.

i switched to macos not too long ago it made me realize how shit windows is, I haven't enjoyed using it since windows 7

Lol this was gold! I can totally se this happing too. "Chrome was already doing our browser, so we decided to let WINE do our OS." - Microsoft

Windows actually turning into a linux distro is the best thing that could happen to this OS, been waiting years for this...

too many people working on too many different things. one hand doesn't know what the other is doing

@vzarytovskii what’s your take on this 😝

This will never happen because the WINE guys still haven't been able to port .NET Framework to Linux. It's been over 20 years. Unless I see Visual Studio 2010 and 2023 running on WINE, it's nothing serious. And the team is literally incapable of supporting this.

Please make Winux happen.

Slowly?

Trillion dollar corporation btw 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The fact that this actually could happen is crazy

will that be a good thing or bad?? i am conflicted

i mean i support it if they turn it into a linux distro 😂 like that would be awesome

It's a good point, I also foresee (w/ 60-70% chance) that Microsoft may eventually start shipping an OS based on existing open source.

the sound effect at the end was 🔥🔥

I don’t think the two correlates. IE was never really a product of its own and chromium is just better, so why not swap to it, Edge is now cross platform, full of ads and tracking and a revenue stream with much lower effort than continuing to maintain IE
