My perspective.. Since the tree was there first, growing towards the light, it must be the bird slowly directing it. I feel this piece is emphasizing that without hopes and dreams - you're merely existing. Hope that's not cheesy.

The tree is holding the bird back as there would be more movement in the trunk if it was the other way around. However, I feel like people who see it as the bird holding the tree are emotional thinkers where people who see the tree holding the bird are more analytical.
