🇺🇦 Ukrainian journalist and human rights defender Maksym Butkevych has been awarded the 2025 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. This award honours outstanding civil society action in defence of human rights across Europe and beyond. Butkevych is a co-founder of the Human Rights Centre Zmina and Hromadske Radio, and for many years has stood at the forefront of defending freedom of expression and dignity. After the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, he volunteered to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces, serving as a platoon commander. In June 2022, he was captured by Russian forces and sentenced to 13 years in prison in a sham trial. For more than two years, he endured harsh imprisonment before finally being released in a prisoner exchange in October 2024. T-Swift, the #cheetah, may not be living out her ‘Wildest Dreams,’ but she is certainly adapting to life at the Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Centre (CRCC) – and creating 'Taylor’s Version.’ The last week has been busy for little T-Swift, and has involved the cheetah cub beginning touch training, which is essential to ensure that receiving vaccines and medical workups become stress-free experiences. #TaylorSwift (the cheetah) also began exploring the new sights and smells of her outdoor enclosure. Grooming – as T-Swift is seen doing here with her brother (still to be named) is an important bonding experience for cheetahs, and observing this behavior indicates that the #cats are relaxed and settling into their new environment. 4th June - Experts discuss the situation in #Tigray Representatives from the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies and the New Lines Institute hold a news conference in Ottawa to discuss the latter's report on the situation in Tigray. The Genocidal war between #Ethiopian, #Eritrean, #Amhara and other regional forces against the regional #Tigray lasted two years and ended with a ceasefire agreement in November 2022. The conflict is estimated to have killed up to 300,000 civilians and over 400,000 soldiers. The New Lines Institute's report concludes there is reason to believe that all sides in the conflict committed war crimes, and that Ethiopian and allied forces appear to have committed crimes against humanity and acts of #Genocide against Tigrayans. Despite the ceasefire, there are reports of continued atrocities in the Tigray region. The Genocidal war between #Ethiopian, #Eritrean, #Amhara and other regional forces against the regional #Tigray lasted two years and ended with a ceasefire agreement in November 2022. The conflict is estimated to have killed up to 300,000 civilians and over 400,000 soldiers. The New Lines Institute's report concludes there is reason to believe that all sides in the conflict committed war crimes, and that Ethiopian and allied forces appear to have committed crimes against humanity and acts of #Genocide against Tigrayans. Despite the ceasefire, there are reports of continued atrocities in the Tigray region.
