"Please do not forget Ukrainian prisoners of war, do not forget Ukrainian civilians illegally detained by Russia, Ukrainian children illegally kidnapped by Russia, do not forget all those who fight for freedom and dignity and are oppressed and deprived of liberty in Europe or elsewhere. Please remember them, fight for their release, and help us defend the most fundamental things without which we cannot imagine our Europe, our future, nor our very humanity".

⚡️For the first time at Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a Ukrainian MP raised the issue of forced mobilization in the context of human rights violations and corruption in Ukraine. Oleksii Honcharenko said: “The actions of President Volodymyr Zelensky increasingly contradict the values that we are defending here—democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Human rights. Ahmad Shahidov exposed India’s human rights violations in Kashmir at OSCE Vienna meeting On May 6, a two-day conference titled “Protecting Civil Society: The Role of Human Rights Defenders and the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly” continued its work in Vienna, organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Finnish OSCE Chairmanship. The event brought together ambassadors, diplomats, and official representatives from 57 countries to discuss the protection of civil society within the OSCE region, the work of human rights defenders, the protection of freedom of peaceful assembly, and the current challenges in these areas. Ahmad Shahidov, head of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights and a human rights defender, delivered a speech during the panel discussion. In his address, Shahidov highlighted increasing pressure on human rights defenders by India in South Asia, mass human rights violations in the Kashmir region, war crimes trials underway in Baku, and the growing nuclear threat in the region, warning that such escalation poses a direct risk to European and global security. At the start of his remarks, Shahidov responded to a statement made by an Armenian colleague, stressing that human rights issues should not be politicized or manipulated. He stated that the Armenian nationals currently on trial in Baku are being prosecuted for committing war crimes and financing terrorism. Shahidov emphasized that he personally attended those court hearings, where Araik Harutyunyan, Ruben Vardanyan, and others made confessions confirming their crimes. He invited international colleagues to attend these trials and see the facts for themselves. Further in his speech, Shahidov drew attention to the human rights abuses in #Kashmir, documented by Amnesty International and UN reports. He noted India’s ongoing repression in the region, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and arrests of human rights defenders and journalists. Dr Tinashe Hofisi, a Zimbabwean human rights lawyer and legal scholar currently serving as a Research Fellow at the Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia, recently joined an interesting debate on Constitutional Amendment Bill N0.3 with Professor Jonathan Moyo. The debate was organised by the Southern African Times and run in full by The NewsHawks. Hofisi's work primarily focuses on constitutional law, judicial design, and enforcement of human rights in Africa. He is currently a Research Fellow at the University of Virginia School of Law and the Karsh Institute of Democracy. Previously, he was a Hauser Global Fellow at New York University. Before his academic career in the United States, Hofisi spent seven years as a human rights lawyer with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, specialising in constitutional litigation.

Seven Ukrainian civilians who had been illegally held captive by Russia for years have returned home. They were detained by Russians in 2022 during the occupation of Mariupol and Kyiv region (including Bucha district, where Russian troops committed atrocities in 2022), as well as Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions. One of the Ukrainians was abducted from his own home simply because his sons serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Their reported use of public floggings, arbitrary detention, and other harsh punishments to enforce restrictive policies has drawn widespread international condemnation. No authority can justify stripping half the population of their basic rights through fear and coercion. Such repression stands in direct conflict with universal human rights and the principles of equality, justice, and human dignity. The international community should continue to press for accountability, support the protection of Afghan women and girls, and advocate for their rights to education, work, and full participation in society. Standing silent in the face of persistent oppression risks allowing these abuses to continue unchecked; solidarity with Afghan women means defending their rights, dignity, and freedom.
