Mwana deserves an award for auntie of the year! Little Lenny delivered a serious head butt, then realised the error in his ways as nannies Kiasa, Sonje, and even baby Sulwe thundered over. Lenny is a precocious chap, but he is also learning that bad manners won’t be tolerated amongst his family! Our Umani elephant family is remarkable. Mwana, Lenny and Sulwe are all SWT ‘grandkids’ — wild calves born to orphans we rescued, raised, and reintegrated back into the wild. Meanwhile, Kiasa and Sonje are orphans rescued and raised in our care. They are elephants of two worlds: living wild as they choose, but also fiercely devoted to their human-orphan family. Lenny is fast out of the blocks when he realises the herd is heading for its midday milk feed. Funny thing is, he doesn’t need or get a bottle: Unlike the rescued orphans in Umani, Lenny has his mum by his side — wild-living orphan Lima Lima — and with that, access to milk ‘on demand’! Baby Zigi, the youngest elephant calf — born to Zongoloni — brings up the rear. Only a month old, he’s doing a great job in trying to keep up with his older ‘brother’ Lenny. They are two of 76 calves born to orphaned elephants we’ve rescued, raised, and rewilded. A next generation of elephants alive today thanks to a life saved many years ago. When we rescued Toto, he was more woolly mammoth than elephant. His rescue story is extraordinary. A herd of ex-orphans – elephants we'd raised and reintegrated – discovered the hairy newborn calf all alone in the bush. Kito is pure charm! Born just last week, this precocious little sprite is already winning hearts. Lucky for her, she has two protective big sisters, Kama and Kaia, to show her the ropes and spoil her endlessly. Kito represents hope for the future. Her mother, Kinna, was rescued as a newborn in 1999 and raised through our Orphans’ Project. Now, 25 years later, she’s a shining example of how one life saved can lead to generations of new beginnings. Meet Kito and learn how she came to be part of this incredible story:

One week, four babies! The pitter-patter of tiny feet is getting louder by the day, as our ex-orphans continue to make the pilgrimage home to share their new calves. Today, our posts are all about them! (1) Makireti is now a mum, arriving in the afternoon to show off her newborn son. Elephants are all about family, and pictured with our first-time mum and her beautiful baby is Kofi — ex-orphan Kilabasi’s 3 year old calf — and Neshashi. We will share more in the days ahead, but you can discover the name we have chosen for Makireti’s baby on our website, where you can also make a donation to celebrate and support our Orphans’ Project: #BabyDay

Mentorship is very important in elephant society. During the reintegration phase, we help our dependent orphans transition to their wild lives by offering a safe, supportive environment in which they can learn from and mingle freely with wild elephants, ex-orphans, and their families. This scene captures how naturally these dynamics unfold: The big bull, known as ‘Customer Number One’, is a wild elephant who often arrives early to join the orphans for breakfast. On this morning, he lined up beside ex-orphan Chyulu (far left) and her wild-born sons, Cheka and Charli, surrounded by our dependent herd. Meet Sulwe. You met her mum, Sonje, earlier this week. Sulwe was born wild on Christmas morning 2024, in the Kibwezi Forest just outside our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Sonje was once one of our most seriously wounded rescues – she arrived in 2012, nine months old, with a fractured leg – a victim of the poaching crisis. Thirteen years later, Sonje is wild, and Sulwe is the proof. She turned one in December. Earlier this year she tried to pull the tail of another wild-born calf, found out he was stronger than she expected, and ran back to her mother. Human or elephant, the kids all have to learn how to get along, it seems. Every calf like Sulwe is a bright light of hope for elephants. Meet some of the others, alive today because years ago we rescued their orphaned mothers:
