This is where the Texans lost the game IMO: 4th & 10 at the Chiefs’ 40, down 8 with 10 minutes left. DeMeco Ryans, typically a conservative, defensive-minded coach, surprisingly went hyper-aggressive by going for it. Instead of punting to pin an offense they’d mostly contained— majority of points came from a short field after a kick return, missed FG, and personal fouls—he went for it. The Chiefs hadn’t driven the length of the field all game but you go for 4th & long, snapping the ball as the play clock expired, giving the chiefs the ball on your own 44. Defense forces a 3 & out. Chiefs are faced in same scenario (4th & long on Texans 43), punt and pin us at the 7. 3 & out & they get the ball with great field position again, FG, game.

Let me state up front that these two plays were NOT the reason St. John's lost yesterday. And I am a numbers guy so no need to tell me about our shooting stats in the game. But I need to vent. We knew Arkansas over their prior 8 games was making a concerted effort to get to the free throw line - they averaged 26.5 free throws over this 8 game period. In the 10 games prior to this 8 game period, Arkansas averaged 19.3 free throws attempts per game - right in line with D1 average per game. The coaching staff gave a clear direction to our players prior to the game - wall up with your hands in the air and maintain verticality. I am including two clips here of just that in which the Arkansas player initiated contact, Zuby and Kadary went straight up with their hands in the air, and Arkansas was rewarded with two trips to the free throw line. In the first clip, St. John's had a 4 point lead with 2 minutes to go in the first half with momentum as Arkansas hadn't made a field goal in 3 minutes. Zuby does exactly what he was instructed when Boogie Fland initiated contact and the baseline ref who is 6 feet away from the action does not blow his whistle, but another ref does award Boogie Fland two free throws. That started a 7-0 run for Arkansas and they went into the half with a 3 point lead. I can't provide enough words on the second clip on just how unjust it was to have a late whistle call on Kadary going straight up in the air and getting his fifth foul called on him with 6:28 to play. Kadary was limited to just 16 minutes of play in the entire game because of foul trouble. And as a reminder, I will end this post with how I started it. Eagles/Bears 2018 Wild Card: The Double Doink Game This was a defensive slugfest from start to finish as the Eagles trailed 6-3 at half with Nick Foles throwing 2 INTs. But playoff Foles magic always shows up. He answered in the 2nd half with a TD to Goedert, then delivered a legendary 4th and goal strike to Golden Tate to take the lead with under a minute left. And then came the moment that made this game immortal: the Bears lining up for a very makable game winning field goal only for it to double doink off the upright and crossbar. Eagles held on to win 16-15.

Byron Scott tells story of him coaching Kobe Bryant through his last NBA game when he scored 60 “He started off horrible, couldn’t make a shot… When he start that game off the first 3/4 minutes I was like ‘this is not how I want him to go out.’ He got fouled and hit two FTs then all hell broke loose. The 2nd half I told him ‘you’re not coming out. Get ready to play the rest of this game.’ Every timeout I’d have my board and sit down with the guys and say ‘here’s our play guys. This was a cool moment picked up on the broadcast last night. Naz Reid, who finished the game with 21 points on 7-10 FG, is upset after picking up 2 quick fouls. Then, Joe Ingles says something that cracks Naz and Bones Hyland up. Joe keeping things light, as usual.

This happened between an umpire and two dads at a youth baseball game. The first dad was arguing with the umpire and the umpire told him to leave the field. He warned him that if he didn’t leave he would call the game. 💯 The dad kept arguing for a bit and then starts to walk away but I guess the ump felt it was too late and called the game. You can hear one of the boys say “just leave”. Once the game is called another dad comes over and starts yelling at the umpire because he called the game. I’ll tell you, this is the reason I gave up coaching after 20 years, parents like this. They ruin it for everyone. What would you do if you were the coach of that team? Ask the fathers not to attend games? Kick the boys off because of their parents? What’s the best way to handle this?

Denis Shapovalov on State of the One-Handed Backhand on Tour “In a way it’s a strength because you can definitely generate more power, can get sharper angles, and be more flashy/creative with a one-handed backhand. But, in today’s game it’s very much heading towards the way of having a solid two-handed backhand and generating with the forehand. The game is so quick today, it helps to have that extra arm on the backhand. That’s why it’s so much more rare to see guys that have one-handed backhands….I blame Roger Federer, I grew up watching him and wanted to play like him so that’s def a big reason why I have a one-hander” 😅
