Some relationships are older than borders. For the Muslim world, this relationship is called 'Ummah' a shared identity, a shared destiny. In 1969, leaders of the Muslim world gathered in Rabat and resolved to speak with one voice, which resulted in the creation of today's Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). What began with a few countries has now grown into a large family of 57 member states from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and other regions, making it the world's second largest international organization after the United Nations. It represents nearly two billion people, united by a shared vision of peace, development, education and human dignity. Over time, the OIC has strengthened its commitment to promoting women's rights, leadership and effective participation in society. To give practical form to this commitment, the Women's Development Organization, the Agenda for the Advancement of Women and the series of Ministerial Conferences on Women, which began in Istanbul in 2006, were established.
