Chamath: Two terms you need to pay attention to in AI are Prefill and Decode “There's two terms that I think you're going to hear a ton about over these next few years.” “The first term is prefill, and the next is decode.” “What prefill and decode are, are two very distinct ways of how models think, and how a model goes through the process of answering a question that you ask it.” “And so when you send a prompt to AI, what happens is that the model processes it. This is called the reading phase or prefill.” “It reads your entire prompt all at once. And then it does a bunch of math, calculates all these relationships between all the words, and it stores them in temporary memory.” “The problem is that this is really compute bound. So it requires massive brute force. And Nvidia GPUs crush here.” “And their architecture is designed for massive parallel processing, which makes them really amazing at digesting these long prompts.” “So the problem just gets bigger and bigger, Nvidia just completely dominates.” “But the next phase though, this critical phase, the decode phase, is the writing phase, right?” “So the model starts to generate a response, you ask it a question and its response, one token at a time.” “And then to pick the next token to pick the next word, it has to look back at everything it has said already so that it doesn't hallucinate.” “The problem is that this is incredibly memory bandwidth constrained.” “And in our architecture, a long time ago, we made these design decisions from day one.” “And so what we did was we took a very different architectural approach, we took a very conservative process technology. We weren't pushing the boundaries of physics.” “And we used a lot of what's called SRAM. The hard part to me with the whole pace of play thing is that you, there's so much that goes into golf and there's so much that goes into hole to hole in terms of, are you hitting it close, are you able to tap it in, or you have to mark it, stuff like that, to where, are you holding the group up or are you not, to where it's very hard to make that call. And we just didn't agree with it, to be honest. "But we got taken off, and a hole later we were caught up. So it kind of goes to our point of why we didn't think we should of, but it is what it is. We are more than happy to cooperate with the government on developing such a plan. There are not many issues these days that the government and the entire opposition can agree on. I think the government should have a discussion in parliament. We should try not to make it a discussion where we are abusing you, and you are abusing us. I think we should make it a discussion where we are participating, we are showing the country that on this fundamental issue, there is agreement, and the best minds are going to be put into place to solve this issue. I think it would be good if we have a detailed discussion and then the Prime Minister puts in place a plan for each city methodical systematic plan on how, within the next five or ten years, maybe we cannot resolve the problem, but how we are going to address the problem and make life for our people easier." I love that the problem everyone has with the tush push this week, has absolutely nothing to do with the actually pushing portion. Like banning the tush push doesn’t even stop what they have an issue with from the play this last week. The Eagles still could have done exactly what they did last week with it being a regular QB sneak. Officials being more stringent on players aligning in the neutral zone and false starts is the only way to stop what everyone has an issue with. And I get it, there were at last a couple from the game that were too early, and should be called false starts. It is an extremely hard thing to officiate, and good players on both sides of the ball jump the snap and use the neutral zone to their advantage on multiple downs and plays throughout the game. Getting rid of the tush push will not stop the issue everyone is riled up about.
