It blows my mind seeing the engineering boundaries that were being pushed in the late 40s and early 50s. Northrop's YB-49, a heavy flying wing strategic bomber prototype, looks like something out of science fiction.

The death of the first flying wing On this day in 1948: USAF prototype Northrop YB-49 [42-102368] a flying wing jet bomber, crashes in California (US) all 5 aboard die. The aircraft had a structural failure on a test flight. Enquiry stated that the outer wing sections detached when pulling from a dive, likely after an intentional stall. Despite development work continuing for two more years, the YB-49 project would be canceled in the mid-1950s, in favor of more conventional designs. The flying wing concept only became practical with the advent of computers in the 1980s, with the B-2, whose advanced electronics compensated for the instability of the tailless aircraft. As a memorial to the victims, Forbes AFB and Edwards AFB are named in honor, respectively, of the pilot (Major Daniel Forbes) and copilot (Capt Glen Edwards) who perished in this crash. In the late 1940s Jack Northrop aggressively championed passenger variants of the YB-49 Flying Wing. He believed the all-wing jet would excel as an efficient airliner. Promotional films in 1948 showed cabin layouts inside the 172 ft wing. The USAF cancelled it in 1949. 🫡

Seen here in a promo video, the SR.45 Princess remains the largest all-metal flying boat to have ever been constructed. Unfortunately, at that time, in the early 50s, the era of the flying boat was ending, and it never went past prototype stages.

In late 2024 and early 2025, the Philippine Mars, the last flying Martin JRM Mars water bomber, made its final flights before retirement. This reminds me of the famous real-life rescue of the survivors from the USS Indianapolis, which was carried out by another water bomber.

I'm in my 40s, and my entire life, I've witnessed East Asians, White-Americans, and Europeans dominate and maintain dominance in science and development. There are dozens of school programs for African-Americans in the U.S., trillions of dollars in aid to sub-Saharan Africa, and nothing to show for it. The complete and absolute dominance that Whites and East Asians enjoy over the rest of the world is unfathomable.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek thinks not owning a home - being a renter is liberating and that homeownership is so outdated: "We are starting to see a segment of the population reject this idea of owning a home and they are moving towards rental because it gives them more freedom...so people became much more liberated around what housing looks like, and what the tenure of housing looks like... But as municipalities we haven't kept pace with that change we are still stuck in the 40s, 50s and 60s." Apparently being a forever renter, never having your own home when you retire and stuck in overpriced shitboxes is liberating and something we should strive for.

It looks like the undercarriage on the right wing broke the wing hit the runway maybe a snowbank broke off, caught fire and flipped over. Those people getting out like that is fantastic. It's incredible and rare. Great construction.
