Claude Code is way easier. You pay for the subscription, it works, and you do not need to be technical to set it up. Most people do not need the extra power of OpenClaw anyway.

GPT-5.4 is my new default model for OpenClaw. For the last 2 months, Opus was the only model I felt could really unlock OpenClaw for serious agent tasks. GPT-5.4 is the first one that got close enough in quality to change that. In practice, it feels ~60% faster (73 tok/s vs 46), costs about half as much, and gives ~5x longer context. That combination makes OpenClaw much more snappy as a default. I tested it side by side against Opus 4.6 on deep research + slide generation, and the outputs are inspectable too. Full video below:

There are now 30+ alternatives to OpenClaw. But, I still have not found one that is as good overall. Why? Because OpenClaw hits the sweet spot. It is smooth. It is easy to use. It comes with its own UI gateway. Some alternatives are more secure, but the UI is worse. Others are more lightweight, but way more technical to set up. OpenClaw has the best balance of power, simplicity, and usability.

I set up my OpenClaw🦞 as a non-engineer last week. It owns my marketing/content research at Tella. It does YouTube keyword research, competitor research, finds complaints about Loom, extracts video hooks from TikTok. Tbh, GPT's personality sucks in comparison with Opus. Using a Mac Mini is still kind of a hassle, unless you use have multiple displays or use screen share to your main computer. Being able to start sessions from my phone is amazing, though. Watch part 1 of my beginner-friendly OpenClaw tutorial.
