It honestly cannot be restated enough how beautifully animated this scene is, you can tell a lot of time and effort was put into each frame. To think that all of this was all sketched, drawn, and painted is mind boggling. Unfortunate how uncommon Patlabor discussion is nowadays

As a fellow Patlabor lover I'm disappointed it's not talked about nearly as much and that there's not that much merchandise. But I'm also thankful it's not mainstream because trends can go haywire too quickly these days. I can just enjoy what there is and be content.

That's the one thing that has me on edge if Patlabor gets popular, a lot of the people in the community are nice and well meaning. Anime fans can be really mean spirited and pretentious, don't jive with that kind of stuff

One minute of this is better than a full season of CG Mecha no cap

Tbh I'm willing to take CG if it means they'll find ways to integrate it nicely into anime. While impressive, cel animation of this quality is extremely labor intensive

I saw this movie in a theater in Okayama, Japan way back when. Good times. 😃 It looked AWESOME on the big screen!! Worth getting it as a DVD/BR.

I'm strongly of the opinion that Mamoru Oshii basically killed the franchise by trying to make it as serious as his other works, particularly the second movie and the New Files continuation of the tv series, when the entire rest of the franchise doesn't fit with the tone.

I think The New File's tone is pretty standard in comparison to the other anime, the porn ban episode, bath house episode, the drinking one etc were a lot less serious and pretty goofy

I sometimes wonder how Patlabor didn't just stick around to be a Mecha franchise at least a bit closer to the level of Gundam. We get stuff here & there but nothing as consistent. Noa seems like she's operating on Newtype levels at times given how low the tech level is vs Gundam

Patlabor is still pretty much mecha, they're just machines that exist as every day equipment. Patlabor 2 and 3 don't lean too far into the mecha aspect but everything else does
