The Queen’s Reading Room, launched by Her Majesty in 2023, is a charity celebrating and promoting the transformative power of books in the UK and beyond.

Her Majesty met author Maggie O’Farrell and cast members Joe Alwyn and Jacobi Jupe, who plays the titular role. Residents, known as companions, shared with The Queen their experiences of overcoming homelessness and recovering from trauma. Her Majesty also visited the on-site charity shop, a working forge where companions make jewellery to sell, and the new “Book Nook” supported by The Queen’s Reading Room.

"You allow us to experience life through another's eyes, you encourage us, you make us laugh, you make us cry, you take us on magical journeys and you create a community of book lovers that transcends almost any barrier." 📕 This year marks five years of The Queen's Reading Room, and last night Her Majesty hosted a reception at Clarence House to celebrate the charity's work and present the inaugural Queen's Reading Room Medals. The evening brought together some of the literary world's most celebrated voices whose commitment has helped the charity reach book lovers in more than 180 countries. 🏅 Her Majesty presented the inaugural medals to two outstanding Reading Heroes. The National Reading Hero Medal was awarded to Selina Brown, founder of the Black British Book Festival — Europe's largest celebration of Black literature. The Local Reading Hero Medal was awarded to Liz Waterland, in recognition of her dedication to Deepings Community Library in Lincolnshire. Their Majesties also met finalists whose work reflects the remarkable breadth of effort to make reading accessible to all.

After meeting schoolchildren and members of the public in Bradford today, The Queen, as Patron of National Literacy Trust, hopped onboard the Bradford Stories Bus. The bus has been converted into a travelling literacy event space, helping to inspire children to read and write for pleasure. Afterwards, The Queen visited the Brontë birthplace in Thornton, West Yorkshire, which Her Majesty officially opened. It’s the first time the public has been able to visit the site. The Queen is an avid reader and The Queen’s Reading Room has previously featured Emily Brontë’s classic ‘Wuthering Heights’.

A beautiful day in Bath! 🌤️ 🏛️ At the Holbourne Museum, The Queen visited the recently completed Schroder Gallery and toured new exhibitions, featuring the colourful textiles of fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes and photographs taken by Sir Don McCullin. 🎭 At the Theatre Royal Bath, of which Her Majesty is Patron, The Queen saw members of the community at work in a rehearsal for their production of ‘David Copperfield: A Life’. 📓 Persephone Books, an independent publisher and bookshop founded in 1999, specialises in reprinting neglected fiction and non-fiction, primarily by women writers. Her Majesty ended the day browsing the wide selection of books available in the shop and speaking to the small team that run the business.

And it's a simple fact of life that if you read what everybody else is reading, then the likelihood that you will write what they are writing and worst of all think what they are thinking is, let's say... increased."
