It is deeply concerning and unfortunate that most bodaboda riders operating within Nairobi CBD have developed the habit of riding on the wrong side of the road, putting their own lives, their passengers, and other road users at serious risk. This is the disturbing situation I personally witnessed this... evening while on the ground verifying complaints about alleged harassment and illegal arrests by the county inspectorate team. From my spot checks, the reality was clear many riders are deliberately violating traffic rules. Within a short time, we recorded 348 bodabodas using the wrong side of the road. Out of these, 253 were stopped, turned away, and advised to immediately return to the correct lane, while several others fled upon noticing enforcement officers. Moving forward, enforcement will now be strict and uncompromising. Any bodaboda found breaking traffic rules especially riding on the wrong side will face immediate arrest of BOTH the rider and the passenger, and the motorbike will be impounded. Arresting the passenger is intentional because they enable this lawlessness by accepting unsafe rides. This measure will send a strong message and encourage passengers to demand compliance with traffic rules. Through shared responsibility, we can promote self-regulation, reduce accidents, restore order on our roads, and improve safety within the city. Road safety is not optional. This Tuktuk was stopped by NTSA and traffic police officers while carrying eight passengers instead of the recommended four on the Kisumu-Nairobi Road. Needless to say it was dangerously overloaded. I hope the cyclist, who fled the scene, will be made to face justice for his reckless behaviour. To all passengers, please don't encourage this kind of unsafe road behaviour by keeping quiet. Today I held two important meetings to review the progress on creation of the new TMARS-Traffic Management and Road Safety Bureau of TG and the TADASC- Telangana Anti Drug & Safety Committees in all educational institutions. Work on these has been going on for the last couple of months and is nearing fruition The TMARS is proposed to lead to standardisation of Traffic Management practices across the state and also enhance road safety through Highway patrolling and also taken up maintenance of traffic signals, setting up new ones , road signages and infra etc. The TADASC will extend the drive against narcotics into all educational institutions and make educational institutions responsible for spotting and informing the law enforcement authorities about any suspicious behaviour of students . The students will have to give affidavits regarding drugs and the educational institutions will be liable for not implementing this. They will appoint campus safety coordinators and work with students and authorities and will also look into ragging, acts against dignity of girl students, traffic awareness. This is exactly what I’m talking about. The driver may have been completely wrong, but that does not give a Road Safety Officer the excuse to recklessly endanger the lives of everyone else on the road, including himself. Law enforcement is not supposed to become a greater danger than the offence being punished. This is exactly what I’m talking about. The driver may have been completely wrong, but that does not give a Road Safety Officer the excuse to recklessly endanger the lives of everyone else on the road, including himself. Law enforcement is not supposed to become a greater danger than the offence being punished. If the very people responsible for road safety are creating situations that could cause serious crashes or deaths, then that is not enforcement. It is gross irresponsibility and a failure of professionalism. There must be accountability.
