Work on the documents on ending the war, on security guarantees, and on reconstruction is ongoing – they are going through each point in detail, and there is constructive engagement with the American side. Today, we had a detailed discussion with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, joined by Lindsey Graham and Mark Rutte, on how to strengthen diplomacy, what steps are possible, and on security guarantees and the involvement of Europeans. It was a positive conversation. Thank you, Steve, Jared, Lindsey, and Mark. We agreed to strengthen security guarantees, and I have already instructed our team to promptly update the documents so that the security guarantees for Ukraine are strong, the prospects for post-war reconstruction are real, and everything is doable. Everything must be kept current. We see how the world is changing – how much can shift in a single moment. This concerns both alliances and security challenges alike. Ukraine must receive reliable security: this is the main task. I am grateful that the U.S. President’s envoys hear us and are ready to work together to find the right compromises, steps, and decisions. The key lies in how and what all of us discuss with Russia, and in how the documents are prepared, particularly those on security guarantees. So that Ukrainians clearly understand how partners will respond in the event of renewed Russian aggression, and what will actually deter Russia from aggression. It is important that America remains engaged in the process of bringing peace closer. It is America that Russia fears, and it is American influence that can save many lives, if used as leverage to make Putin end the war. Today brings important decisions on sanctions. A new European sanctions package, the seventeenth, is already in place. This is a step in the right direction, and there should be as many sanctioning steps as necessary for Russia to become interested in peace and to feel the full price of its aggression and desire to prolong the war. I thank everyone who is helping.

However, sensitive political matters, issues of possible compromises, and the necessary meeting of leaders have not yet been sufficiently worked through. On the whole, we agree that this can be put into the foundation of future agreements. But it would be impolite from my side to talk about some final versions because there are none. Some things are crucial. And on the whole we see that the American side, in some points, takes our position into account that was discussed before Anchorage and after Alaska. And on some points we definitely need to sit down and seriously discuss some specific things. We need to put everything into the language of diplomacy.

Yesterday, we came together to honor Governor Pete Wilson. I told everyone there I wanted to share it with the world, because everyone needed to see how Democrats and Republicans can come together and respect each other. We don’t need to see each other as the enemy. Governor Wilson is a Republican, but Speaker Willie Brown, the Democratic leader he battled with in negotiations, was right there with him. Governor Davis, a Democrat, led the meeting. You all know we battled it out in an election and I’m a Republican, but you may not know we are great friends and still work together. We need to step back from this insane politics of hatred and division and learn that we will only get things done by working together. Why hasn’t Washington done anything on immigration or the debt in decades? I would say because they haven’t learned what we have learned in California - that we can disagree but still work together, still respect each other, and still put the people first. I hope this inspires you to lay down your partisan weapons and find a way to see the people who disagree with you with respect.
