Thank you, Bengaluru, for showing up in such large numbers. Today gives us hope that when you stand up for the right cause, people will stand with you. From 91-year-old Yellappa Reddy sir, who led the march, to six-month-old babies - Bengaluru came together to protect its green spaces. What a beautiful city. What wonderful people. We will continue until the government withdraws the 5% park diversion law and drops the disastrous Tunnel Road project. See you next Sunday. And every Sunday after that, at different parks across Bengaluru. We will build this into a massive people’s movement until the government listens, corrects its mistake and stops this madness. Bengaluru’s parks belong to its people. We will protect them.

The public spoke, and the government listened. This is how democracy should function. I thank every citizen who turned up at Lalbagh, under the leadership of 91-year-old Yellappa Reddy Sir, to oppose the 5% park diversion law. I also commend the Chief Minister for respecting public opinion and deciding to withdraw this draconian law. But the fight is not over. Until the disastrous Tunnel Road project is officially dropped, neither Lalbagh nor the ancient Peninsular Gneiss Rock is safe. Today, I argued before the Hon’ble High Court opposing the Tunnel Road project. The Court has directed the Geological Survey of India to place its report before it and fixed the next hearing for September 10. The government has also amended the Karnataka Tank Conservation Act, reducing the lake buffer zone from 30 metres to just 3 metres to facilitate the Short Tunnel project at Hebbal Lake. This amendment too must be withdrawn. Our fight to protect Bengaluru’s lakes, parks and green spaces, and for the sustainable development of our city, will continue. Thank you, Bengaluru, for standing up for your city.

The State Government seems convinced there is a ₹40,000 crore treasure at the end of the Tunnel Road. Nothing else explains its obsession with this stupid and unnecessary project. To facilitate the Long and Short Tunnel Roads, it weakened three important protections Bengaluru fought decades to build. First, the Parks Act was amended to allow diversion of 5% of park land. Second, the Karnataka Tank Conservation Act was amended to reduce the lake buffer from 30 metres to just 3 metres, facilitating acquisition of 3.5 acres of Hebbal Lake for the Short Tunnel. Third, Section 19 of the BMLTA Act was amended, weakening independent scientific scrutiny of these projects and undoing nearly two decades of citizen activism for coordinated urban transport planning. For two unnecessary projects, the Government has weakened protection of our parks, lakes and water security, and compromised scientific transport planning. Citizen pressure has forced a review of the Parks Act amendment. Now we must restore the Tank Conservation Act and the authority of BMLTA. Let’s do this, Bengaluru.

This morning, I visited Lalbagh, interacted with the walkers and thanked them for their support, which forced the Congress Government to withdraw the 5% public park diversion law. But this is only a temporary victory. The fight will continue until the Tunnel road project is dropped. Bengaluru needs a sustainable public transportation model. All other models and solutions for moving private vehicles will fail, become exclusionary, and lead to more private vehicles. There is an urgent need to educate the public on public transportation and its various models as solutions for traffic congestion in our cities. Watch this clip where I have a candid conversation with citizens on various aspects of urban mobility solutions for Bengaluru. Come, Bengaluru, let’s become a model for the rest of the country to follow when it comes to traffic management.

They all had one message - Stop the Tunnel Road project. CM Shri DK Shivakumar had assured Bengalureans that Lalbagh would be protected. During my visit to Lalbagh yesterday, GBA officials refused to accompany us to show the proposed tunnel route under the Lalbagh Rock. Even more alarming was the revelation that a commercial complex is planned at the shaft location within Lalbagh. Along with citizen experts and walkers, I witnessed the potential negative impact this tunnel project could have on the city. It threatens our historical landmarks and fragile ecological balance. The state government’s decision to take over land for a tunnel road that is unscientific, unnecessary, unsafe and unlawful is deeply concerning. Watch.
