Damn that's sick.. I'm working on a globe project for a class of mine. The tileserver on a globe was difficult for me to complete with out debugging. To meet deadlines I just went with a flat map using openmaps free tileservice. Dude have you ever explored GIS Data? You could really tony stark it with free data sources from OpenData , or sources like Nasa etc. Many cities have OpenData like new york for example here( You can use QGis a free opensource software to take geo data, visualize it, color it, create zones and export it to different filetypes. I render geojson on my flat map and have only gotten this far today. Check out tile servers with openstreetmap tile server, QGIS , and the world of OpenData.
