It’s also a great opportunity to reiterate that Will Smith’s performance as Muhammad Ali, under Michael Mann’s direction, is one of the best performances & one of the best choices of Smith’s career. I don’t know anyone who could’ve played Ali better than Smith did in this film.

The Rewatchables did an awesome episode this past week on Michael Mann’s Ali. Preserving Muhammad Ali’s legacy is so important for our culture- Ali was an irreplaceable 20th Century figure. Michael Mann & Will Smith did Ali justice with this film. As discussed on The Rewatchables, this is not a film without flaw, in part because it bites off a little more than it can chew. But Smith absolutely nails this performance & Mann’s direction has so much soul. Please see this film.

I like Michael Mann’s Ferrari a lot. I think this is quietly one of the better films of 2023. Yes, it’s a slow burn, but it burns well considering the attention to detail given by Mann & the performance from Adam Driver, who’s in nearly every scene. It’s a mature, redeemable film

Michael Mann’s Miami Vice turns 20 today. I saw this film in theaters with my dad at such a young age & didn’t initially care for it because of the story’s pacing. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to really embrace this film for its finer qualities- color, sound, just overall tone & vibe. It’s some of the sharpest direction of Mann’s career. This guy is one hell of a director.

Christian Bale would’ve made for a great Odysseus. I really hesitate to even write this because I don’t want to take away anything from the improbable performance from Matt Damon. I don’t know if anyone could’ve done what Damon just did in The Odyssey. But I think if there’s anyone who could’ve held down the role as well or even better than Damon, it’s Christian Bale.

Spike Lee’s Inside Man should be mentioned as one of Spike’s best films ever. Denzel is incredibly magnetic in this film- I think it’s one of his best post-Training Day performances. The entire cast is also excellent, from Clive Owen to Chiwetel Ejiofor to Willem Dafoe & Jodie Foster. That’s all without mentioning the late Christopher Plummer, who himself is exceptional in this film. I truly love this movie.
