Michael Mann’s Ali is a film I write about frequently because I think Will Smith’s performance as Ali is profound. Yes, I said profound. I grew up in a Muhammad Ali Household: my dad loved this man & passed that love down to me & my sister. As an... show more

It’s also a great opportunity to reiterate that Will Smith’s performance as Muhammad Ali, under Michael Mann’s direction, is one of the best performances & one of the best choices of Smith’s career. I don’t know anyone who could’ve played Ali better than Smith did in this film.

The Rewatchables did an awesome episode this past week on Michael Mann’s Ali. Preserving Muhammad Ali’s legacy is so important for our culture- Ali was an irreplaceable 20th Century figure. Michael Mann & Will Smith did Ali justice with this film. As discussed on The Rewatchables, this is not a film without flaw, in part because it bites off a little more than it can chew. But Smith absolutely nails this performance & Mann’s direction has so much soul. Please see this film.

I will never, ever forget the first time I saw Mahershala Ali in Moonlight for as long as I live. This performance rocked me. Ali brings a unique combination of masculinity & humanity to this performance. It’s literally acting of the highest order. Ali sat down with LeBron James & Mind the Game this week. It’s worth a listen. Mahershala is brilliant.

Michael Mann’s Blackhat is probably his most misunderstood film. I really enjoy this- I think the quality of production & filmmaking is high. I also think Chris Hemsworth gives a strong leading-man performance here. The story has its flaws, but the film overall is good.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is out in just over a month on September 25th & I can’t wait to see this movie. I can’t wait to see Mahershala Ali go to work with director Bassam Tariq. I think it’s a match made in heaven & could potentially bring Ali back to the same caliber of work that helped him win multiple Oscars. People sleep on Ali sometimes, but he’s as good of an actor as there is in the industry. I root for this film’s success.

The entire Türkiye talks about this song about Ali al-Akbar, the young son of Husayn Ibn Ali!... Who is the singer of this song? I would love to produce a song with him as a Turkish songwriter and composer.

Bruce Springsteen turns 76 today. As a child of the Midwest, I’m not sure I can put into words what this man means to me. Bruce was & is a God where I grew up. He also owns an Oscar for Best Original Song for the film Philadelphia, blending my two favorite things: Bruce & film 🎂

That’s a bullshit rating. My review of Michael (🌟🌟🌟) is pinned to my profile right now & it’s definitely better than a Rotten Score simply because of Jaafar Jackson’s performance. As I state in my review, Michael does a great job focusing on MJ’s music. I recommend this film.

Bruce Buffer shares how meeting Muhammad Ali as a child left a lifelong impression on him "When I was 5, I was in a hotel with my brother in Philadelphia. A tall Black man walked into the lobby, and I recognized him. I said, ‘Dad, look.’ He said, ‘Son, go say hi.’ So I went over and said hi, and he spent 5–10 minutes with us talking. His name was Cassius Clay, who became Muhammad Ali. That had a huge impression on me. When I walk through the audience and I see that little hand sticking out, I’ll make sure to give them time." Ali: Weren’t you even ashamed when you told Sultan that Haydar Ali doesn’t love you? Cey: I didn’t lie, Ali. I just wanted Sultan to know the truth. Ali: And I want Bozo to know the truth too. My wonderful dad Arnie Bloom passed away on Sunday night. He was an intelligent, funny, decent & beautiful man who meant everything to me. This clip is from a film I made about him 9 years ago. Please do the same for your loved ones if you can. The full film is on my YT 💔

Nick Nolte is 85. An actor I love. He’s made countless films & dozens of movies that I will always watch for as long as I live. His #Oscar nominated performance in Warrior is one of his best. He puts his entire soul on the line & then some. This is a film you should see.

Brian De Palma is on my mind again. Can you blame me? I grew up on mafia movies & watching them with my dad is one reason I love Cinema. My parents spent a number of years up in Chicago, so The Untouchables was a mainstay of my childhood. Great mafia film. Great Chicago film.
