Unlike when Mojtaba Khamenei's father Ali Khamenei became supreme leader in #Iran, Mojtaba, apart from a selection of photos from regime parades, does not have an extensive public profile. The first video of him speaking on camera only appeared in 2024 (see below). And it was a grainy cellphone video. So the Islamic Republic's propaganda apparatus has to rely on AI-generated content and previous photos.

Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei gave his first public statement since his appointment on Thursday, vowing revenge and saying the Strait of Hormuz will continue to be closed. The statement was being read out by a presenter on Iranian state television. Iran's new leader did not appear on television himself, raising questions about his health after he was believed to have been wounded in a strike early in the war with the U.S. and Israel.

Supporters of Mojtaba Khamenei created a video using AI showing Mojtaba giving his first speech. It can be noted that this is actually a speech by Ali, not Mojtaba, which was made using AI. Mojtaba Khamenei has not yet spoken and his voice has not been heard. The reasons are unclear and it is possible that this could indicate his condition.

The regime announced that its newly appointed Supreme Leader would appear live to address the nation. Crowds gathered. Cameras rolled. But instead of their leader appearing… officials brought out a framed photo and read a written message on his behalf. More than a week into the war, Mojtaba Khamenei still has not appeared publicly.

Has anyone actually seen or heard from Mojtaba Khamenei? Ever since the Feb 28th strikes wiped out the regime's top brass, the supposedly "new Supreme Leader" has been completely MIA. Zero photos. Zero verified audio. No proof of life for almost 5 months. Instead, the regime is literally attempting to prove life through AI-generated videos, scripted press releases, and social media posts. I have a question for you. If a U.S. President was "wounded," vanished for half a year, and you were expected to just blindly trust basic AI clips saying "I'm alive," would you buy it for even a week?

In this new written message, read out on state television after Ali Khamenei's funeral, #Iran's regime's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei promises vengeance, "We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraced killers." It raises real questions as to why he can't release even an audio message.

A few observations from Khamenei's speech--his first after the historic protests in #Iran last night. (1) This was a classic Khamenei speech. He didn't give an inch. Doubled down. Deflected. He's been marinating for four decades in his ideology and conspiratorial thinking. And he had a front row seat for the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Khamenei believed because the Shah made concessions that contributed to his downfall. Therefore, that is a lesson Khamenei has applied to all rounds of protests, so he will likely hold firm. This is why the Iranian people have concluded the Islamic Republic must go. It can't be reformed. (2) Khamenei delivered the speech from the Imam Khomeini Husseiniyeh in a public setting--which is attached to his office likely to show he is not hiding underground and hasn't fled. It's also why I'm skeptical of reports Khamenei has plans to flee. He will die in Iran, in my assessment, as it's not like he has extensive ties abroad. He's different in that way. Perhaps others around him would flee, but not him.

Iranian protesters have produced and circulated mock missing-person notices for Mojtaba Khamenei, ridiculing the new Islamic Republic leader’s prolonged absence from public view since his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed. The satirical poster says Mojtaba was “last seen” at the Leader’s Office in Tehran but no one has seen him since. Styled like a public missing-person alert, it jokingly names the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as the reporting party. The notice lists his personal details, including age, height and appearance, alongside a cartoon figure in clerical clothing. It offers a “reward” of 2 million tomans (almost $12.5) for information about his whereabouts. In one of the poster’s sharper lines, the mock alert says the reward was increased because “the family is very worried and anxious” that he may not attend his father’s funeral slated for July 4-9.

🇮🇷 The latest message from Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, delivered by Hojjatoleslam Hajj Ali Akbar, warned that Israel cannot tolerate a strong, independent Iran and "will not hesitate to take any action" to stop its progress. With Iran having suffered military losses, he says the enemy has shifted to a "hybrid war" focused on two goals: weakening public confidence and pushing officials into miscalculation. His message to the Iranian people: stand firm, stay united, and don't echo the enemy. Any official action that breeds pessimism among the public, he warned, "is a form of assistance to the enemy." Former CIA operative Jonny Gannon says the decision to appoint Motjaba Khameini as the new supreme leader “is the message from the regime that they are still in control.” Mojtaba Khamenei is clearly not a charming public face; what he is is a systems operator,” he says. “So, he was a gatekeeper for the supreme leader's office in the past. He has strong ties to the IRGC and the Basij, he knows how power actually operates, and he is, effectively, a symbol of continuity right now.”
