The Curious Case of the Lift. 🔍 He lifted. 40 metres before the line. On the lap that decided pole. And it was the fastest thing he could legally do. It started on Friday morning in P1, with a number racing cars do not do: both Mercedes, dead flat at 298 km/h down the Hangar Straight, pedal pinned. Cars speed up. Cars slow down. They do not hold a constant with the driver's foot flat to the floor. I filed it as curious. Then Sprint Quali gave the case a body: pole by 0.011s, and the losing car crossed the line coasting. So I checked every lap. 🔍 14 out of 14 qualifying laps. Both drivers. Every session. 🔍 Never once on a race run. 🔍 Same 40-metre window every time. Any wind. Any tyre. The suspects, eliminated: ❌ Driver error. 2 drivers, 2 sessions, an overnight telemetry review in between. ❌ Sandbagging. Nobody donates pole by 0.011. ❌ The wind. 16 lift points against the weather data. Correlation: 0.12. What's left is 1 line in the rulebook. When a quali battery runs dry, the power has to fade away slowly, by law. Unless the driver himself asks for less. So Mercedes spend every joule where the lap pays most, and end it with a foot instead of software. The driver is what keeps the car legal. The lift didn't lose pole. Flat to the line was never legally available. The lift was the fastest legal way home. PS: Ferrari took pole by solving the same lap backwards. Lowest drag on the grid, so the budget stretches: 322 km/h, still accelerating, flat across the line every single lap. 2 philosophies, 1 constraint, 0.011 between them. 📨 Every chart and every number, in the newsletter: 🎥 The full investigation: 🎧 Prefer your strategy by podcast? "If by the end of the year you lose the championship by exactly that point you will ask yourself: 'Why didn't you do so?'" Michael Schumacher's response to questions after the 2010 German Grand Prix and Ferrari team orders. This was about actually giving up the win btw, not just letting someone past on a different strategy. This is a winner and a winner's mentality and everyone at the top knows that this is what you have to do to win so I dont know why people on this platform are being purposefully dense about it. Michael, Fernando, Seb, Max, they all would not accept losing time to the second driver teammate for a moment and neither will Lewis. The loser's mentality of citing a lack of chances in the title fight might cut it with Charles, it won't with a 7x world champion. You lose a handful of points here, a handful of points in Spa, a handful of points in every race and suddenly that adds up to an immense margin. Ferrari have a slither of a chance of winning this title with Lewis, not with Charles. This team hasn't won in two decades, now is not the time to throw in the towel prematurely. This is a competitive sport, not a charity organization. If Mercedes feel the pressure, they won't hesitate to make the call, even did so yesterday. Same goes for Mclaren and Red Bull. Championships are won and lost by these decisions and that's why Ferrari haven't been serious contenders in ages. Leclerc had the opportunity to fight for this title, he no longer does and must now play the role of the supporting cast. They'll hate to hear it but yes, he is now Lewis' Bottas for as long as Ferrari want to be serious about winning this season.

Jolyon Palmer answers the question 'Why didn't Leclerc get a penalty for not giving the position back to Lewis?' "It's a good question and I don't have the answer. So let's have a look with this reverse angle because I think it becomes more clear cut here that Hamilton should have that place, second position, because of the way here that Charles gives Hamilton the space, Verstappen is then going to have a squeeze. At the moment, Max is looking like he's going to have a clear launch down the outside. Remember, he's on a medium tyre, so it's a particularly decent start. But in the end, we get four wide. You've got the two Ferraris neck and neck. You've got Verstappen so ambitious out wide onto the kerb. It's the first race he's not led out of the out of the first corner since 2019 here. He's got astonishing form and as a result, a lot of confidence to go and attack this first corner. You can actually see Hamilton is marginally ahead of Charles Leclerc before the braking zone. So it's just a nose in front. But I would say the Ferrari on the left is ahead of the Ferrari on the right." "We come through the corner. So if we ignore Verstappen now, he's never going to make it stop from that outside line. We come through the corner and now Charles is in a real squeeze here. We've had contact in the past before with Perez, Leclerc and Verstappen. This time it's Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen. And they managed to get through. Max doesn't turn in. He can't turn in." "So now Lewis has definitely got the second place. He's ahead of Charles, who is coming through. He's got space to stay on the track should he wish to stay on the track. But he's also chosen to go wide at this point, realises that you can just cut through. He's done it before at the first corner and gets away with it. Behind, you've got Antonelli going to do the same thing from side by side with Russell. Piastri actually is going to go deep as well, but try his best to stay on the track, whereas others won't. And Leclerc, from behind Hamilton, chooses to go off the road." "He's not forced off by Lewis. You can see the space that Lewis leaves on the exit, goes straight across. The safest thing to do at this point is to absolutely floor it, rejoin in the lead and choose who you're going to let pass. Basically, be your own judge at this point." "And as we play it through, Charles lets Lando go through, but does not let Lewis go through. It should be a penalty. It should be a slam dunk." "I can only assume the stewards saw five cars go through. Absolute melee. You've even got Franco Colapinto at the back of the field having a spin. You've got contact. You've got debris on the circuit. Marshall's needed to retrieve it, which was another sketchy condition that we had early on in the race. And I can only assume the stewards just thought Ferrari side by side, they emerged second and third." "But the reality is here, Charles Leclerc overtook Lewis Hamilton off the track and he should have had a penalty for it." - F1 2025 Mexico -
