Yesterday I spoke in the Westminster Hall debate, secured by my good friend Richard Burgon MP, on banning second jobs for MPs. Being an MP isn’t a side hustle. It’s a public duty. Our constituents expect and deserve representatives whose only priority is serving their communities, not chasing private interests or boosting their own bank balance. Under Iran’s Islamic laws women are not allowed to sing, dance or show their hair in public. On the other hand, in Iran it’s perfectly normal to see public executions of political prisoners, protesters, critics of Islam or the regime, etc.

This is absolutely devasting to watch. The criteria for a public inquiry is very, very simple and clear: • Public Concern – The issue must be of significant public interest. • Serious Failing – It involves major failures in public bodies, governance, or safety. • Accountability – There is a need to establish responsibility and learn lessons. All of the above apply to David Amess’ death by a terrorist who left the Prevent programme early. Sir David Amess’ will never receive justice until the government hold a public inquiry. It’s increasingly clear that this is a thinly guised cover-up.

Peter O Nwebonyi against Oby Ezekwesili during a public hearing on sexual harassment allegation Natasha Akpoti raised against Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON. All citizens, irrespective of status, must learn to engage in civil discourse on matters of public concern, however divergent their views may be. Oby Ezekwesili, like every Nigerian, has the right to hold public officials accountable. The aggression on display today reinforces the lived experiences of women in leadership and reflects how male public officials perceive Nigerian women, post elections. No woman, or any citizen, should be harassed or dehumanized for demanding accountability, a duty central to the effective discharge of the duties of the office of the citizen. Public officials must remember that our children are watching and learning from their conduct. As fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons to women, we must all be outraged by such public displays of disrespect. The increasing dysfunction in our public institutions has an unsalutary effect on society and erodes participatory democracy. Despite the current culture of impunity in our institutions, these officials remain public servants accountable to citizens whose sovereign mandate they hold in trust. Socialist mayors don’t have to openly seize property, they just change the rules. It starts with redefining what counts as “unsafe” or “not up to code,” expanding the city’s authority to step in. Then they double or triple fines until it’s no longer financially sustainable for landlords to keep their buildings. Once owners fall behind, the city steps in “for the good of the tenants” and takes control, transferring the property to a housing trust or public agency. On paper, it’s about safety and maintenance. Everything I have always said about His Excellency Peter Obi comes down to one thing leadership built on prudence, accountability, and genuine concern for the people. Peter Obi has consistently shown a careful and disciplined approach towards the economy. He understands that governance is not about luxury, waste, or enriching a few individuals while millions suffer. Governance must be done prudently, with every kobo accounted for and directed towards improving the lives of the people. One thing that stands him out is his consistency in advocating for the reduction of the cost of governance. At a time when many public office holders focus on buying unnecessary houses, luxury properties, and expensive lounges in states they do not even govern, Peter Obi continues to preach and practice simplicity, accountability, and responsible management of public resources. Nigeria does not need leaders who see public office as an opportunity for personal enjoyment. Nigeria needs leaders who will invest in education, healthcare, security, production, and human development. Leaders who understand that public funds belong to the people and must be used for the benefit of the people. A working economy is built through discipline, production, transparency, and sacrifice not reckless spending and selfish leadership. The original goals are fading, no real talk of dismantling nuclear capabilities or supporting the Iranian people. Plus, Trump is losing interest as public support is collapsing. Vietnam War level collapse. Not many bright spots to point to.
