🐾❤️It's Moon's final day with us. Tonight he goes back to the Service Dog program where he'll have many other adventures. Today he's working on staying in place while the human leaves him and goes and opens the door. This will help him learn to be calm and not... try to go exploring when a door opens, and that when he's in place, he can move around or change positions, but can't leave the mat. He makes mistakes because he's learning, but with a few more repetitions, he'll understand. We didn't teach him a whole bunch of new skills while he was here, but what we've taught him is his marker sounds (clicks, yes and good) and his release word so he understands when he's done the thing he was supposed to, when he should keep doing it, and when he's free to go. This is the foundation that will make learning other skills easy. We've also helped him learn to settle calmly when asked and play when appropriate, and we've introduced him to lots of sites and sounds. He's a delightful pup. We're taking a short break from puppies to get stuff caught up around the house, get some appointments done and other human business. But I'm sure we'll have more puppy chaos in the near future. Maple has been doing Mat training! That's where she learns the mat is where you go settle. You don't have to lay on it, you can get up and change positions, but you stay on mat until released. Jason Day was asked ahead of The Masters whether he has any empathy for what Tiger Woods is going through and he gave a brilliant answer that a lot of people can probably agree with: “So yeah, in regards to Tiger, it just shows the human element and the human side of someone that is struggling with some sort of an addiction. He's not immune to it just because he can hit a golf ball really well. He's had 25 to 30 something surgeries, and when you're going through that many procedures, it's painful coming out of those procedures. I've had procedures done and I typically try and stay away from all that stuff because I just know that -- painkillers, there can potentially be a downfall to it. “Granted, when I look at that, I look at it and go, he's just a human being like everyone else and we have struggles. It's unfortunate, the only thing that I don't understand is that it's a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm's way, as well. “But when you're the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything, and that's probably why he's probably driving and a little bit under the influence. “He was my hero -- he's my hero. He was my hero growing up. The reason why I play golf is because of this tournament and Tiger. Maple had her third session of training with the mat today. Day 1 she figured out she needed to be on the mat and after she was consistently going there, we paired the cue "place". Day 2 continued with the cue and getting her to consistently go to the mat with the handler on all sides. Today we sat further away from the mat and gave the cue, from a distance, and had her stay there for slightly longer durations. She does very well. We'll continue to practice longer durations and cueing from different spots. Once she's super consistent staying there (that should only take a couple more sessions) and is a bit better at keeping all 4 paws on, we'll add some distractions and take the mat outside and practice. Eventually this will be the behavior she will be asked for if she needs wait quietly. We use it at appointments, coffee shops, checkouts etc. We're often asked what the difference is between a place and a down stay is. When we use a down stay, it means the dog stays in the down position and doesn't move, whereas place is more about a zone. The dog can sit, stand, turn around or lay down, as long as they stay on the mat and behave. It's often used in long durations for working dogs so it gives them the opportunity to reposition themselves to be comfortable. Admin Post; Tonight I started shaping a "Place" on a mat with Kenji. As soon as I put the mat down he sniffed, I clicked and tossed a treat. When he came back, he walked right onto it, I clicked and tossed the treat. And then grabbed my phone because I wanted to capture this. He gave me multiple reps of coming to the mat and retrieving the treat within the first few minutes. He had it figured out so fast. I keep these sessions short. Especially with puppies. I lost his focus a bit because he found a stay treat, but we got it back and he offered the behavior of going to the mat. Multiple times. Tomorrow we'll do a couple reputations and I'll add the cue. It's always amazing to work with a puppy like this. The kind that figures things out so fast. Free shaping has the dog figure out what to do by the timing of the click. I only introduced the clicker yesterday for about 4 minutes. In one session he's doing what took 2-3 sessions with pups 6 weeks older. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. You need to have it put on you in the gym. He's a bit flat-footed. He has his areas. He's not fully complete, but he's good, and he can make inroads. His face will have to heal, for sure. This gentleman was leaving a parking lot when this woman was walking by. She start questioning him about where he lives and what he’s doing there, she insists that she’s never seen him before and that he doesn’t belong there. The woman then positions herself so that he can’t close the door without harming her. She tells him to call the police so he can prove to her that he belongs there. I don’t get since when does anyone have to prove they belong to a certain neighborhood, I think she’s doing too much and should let him go about his day, what would you do to escape?
