The geomagnetic storm on May 17 began with a coronal mass ejection (CME) on May 12. We can see the CME in this imagery from a coronagraph on ESA/NASA’s SOHO spacecraft. SOHO's coronagraph intentionally blocks out the Sun’s bright face, or disk, to reveal much fainter activity in the Sun's outer atmosphere, or corona — like this CME! But coronagraphs have applications well beyond our Sun! NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, for example, will use a coronagraph to find planets around distance stars. Learn more:
