George Cukor on Sergei Eisenstein: "I never really understood what Sergei Eisenstein was about. When I came in he had a book out and I’ve never really understood it. I saw the pictures he did and I was very impressed with them, but I never really understood what his theory was. And I pity the poor young people who are required to study that." (Peter Bogdanovich's interview with George Cukor, 1969) Clip from: Alexander Nevsky (1938) Director: Sergei Eisenstein

Before making "Strike" (1925), Sergei Eisenstein spent many months meeting a number of formerly outlawed Party activists and strikers. He visited a number of factories, and assembled a prodigious amount of documentation and read many books such as Émile Zola's 'Germinal'. ("Sergei Eisenstein: A Life in Conflict", Ronald Bergan, 1997) P.S: On this day, 101 years ago, "Strike" (2025) was released in the Soviet Union.
