I took my son to our local butcher, well not too local, it’s about 30 minutes away. He’s getting to be at an age where he’s beginning to be extra compassionate. This is him taking my phone for whatever reason since he has his own, and recording the cows. My dilemma is I can’t hide from him anymore what the fate of these specific animals are. I’ve taken him to this butcher/farm off and on for years. He still loves eating his steak and ribs of course because who doesn’t. But now he’s beginning to associate the truth that the cows he goes and pets and befriends will be the same ones in the display counter where he picks out his steaks. Am I wrong for not wanting to clarify and tell him that’s the case, should I just let him find out on his own? He’s already going through puberty now as we speak, he’s been extra hormonal and angry. I don’t know if I want to add another burden for him. I don’t want to tell him the animals he loves are the ones he’s been eating. Part of me wants to just get it over with but a part of me wants to not say anything, I don’t want to speed things up for him too quick. He has no problem buying steaks from grocery stores and such. The problem I’m facing now is that this place that sells meat also is where they raise the cows for slaughter. So the ones we see on the farm will be the same ones weeks from now that we will be eating. I’m not sure what I want to do just yet but I’ll keep you posted.

Every time a comedian comes under fire, this is what I wish I could scream from the rooftops: You’re allowed to speak about what you find to be “inappropriate” comedy, but just understand that—in this instance—you almost always sound annoying to everyone else in the room. You sound like every other person who’s ever complained about how we “shouldn’t joke about that.” In this instance, there’s nothing special, moving, or compelling about your voice. If a joke fails with an audience, a joke fails. If it fails repeatedly, it’s probably either not funny or not delivered well. If it’s not funny, it shouldn’t be told. But at a COMEDY show, that’s literally the only reason to censor yourself—because what you were gonna say was overwhelming not funny—not because it “wasn’t appropriate.” If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen, snowflakes. *and no, this isn’t me saying I thought the joke—or the special (which I haven’t seen)—was funny.

I’ve finally figured out that the Sokoto governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto is just very expressive in the way he speaks. People always say he’s a “man of nitty gritty” with his words, and at first I thought it was just for effect. But the more I listen, the more it feels intentional. He breaks things down, puts emphasis where it matters, so you actually understand the context and don’t miss the point. What started as me brushing it off as “too much talk” is making sense to me now. Like joke like joke, I’ve become a fan.
