I’ve been getting into some of Robert Duvall’s deep cuts lately & that includes Joe Kidd, in which Duvall stars alongside Clint Eastwood in a film directed by John Sturges. Young Duvall was lethal. I wrote earlier about how Duvall had multiple primes. This was the first.

Billy Bob Thornton was on with Rich Eisen today talking Robert Duvall & I’m not kidding in the slightest when I say this interview helped me cope with Duvall’s passing. I didn’t realize Thornton & Duvall made multiple films together, like here in Sling Blade. It’s a great listen.

Al Pacino & Robert Duvall say so much with just their eyes. This scene in The Godfather Part 2 is one of my favorite scenes in film history. Some of Pacino’s best scenes as Michael Corleone were shared with Duvall. Duvall was so greatly missed in the third Godfather. Two icons.

Robert Duvall & Jeff Bridges each own #Oscars for Best Actor. Bridges won his here in Crazy Heart. Duvall’s not in this film much but this scene jumped out to me the moment I first saw this in theaters. This is a special scene between two special actors. I’m thankful for Duvall.

Robert Duvall is on AFI’s Top 100 Films six times. That’s the most of any actor. Ever. Period. Probably because Duvall’s intensity can’t be replicated. When this guy showed up in a film, he brought it all- and then some. I love Duvall as much as any actor in film history. A king.

Robert Duvall played Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird in one of his first roles in 1962. Duvall’s place in the history of cinema can’t be understated- it just can’t. He’s been apart of some of the most important films in the history of this art form. We lost a giant today. RIP

ALERT: Cops get into a shoot-out after chasing a suspect in Montgomery County, Maryland. Police responded to a call about criminal activity when they saw a known drug user pacing in a parking lot, before being approached by another man, Andre Duvall. Officers tried to approach Duvall, but he took off running. After a short chase, Duvall reportedly tried to shoot at one of the officers around a blind corner. The officer then shot Duvall, who was then sent to the hospital. He has since been transferred to jail. Duvall, a prior convicted felon, faces two counts of attempted first-degree, two counts of first and second-degree assault and gun charges.

Widows is a damn good film that was totally overlooked by The Academy. I’ve been thinking about this film more lately because it’s one of Robert Duvall’s final films. I love this entire cast. Every actor in this film is excellent. And it’s a great Chicago movie. It deserved more.

However, in 2021, Duvall revealed that he had one line cut from the film: “At the end, when they’re [Jem and Scout] leading me home, they say, ‘We’re going to take you home,’ and I say Something like, ‘Where are you taking me?’ or ‘Where?’ Something like that. That was all, but they cut the line.”

But the most memorable one for me is this one in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978). He features for less than 20 seconds. The image of him in the swing playing like a kid might be inscribed in my mind probably because of this trivia. This just shows how much of a good guy he was. The story behind the scene: Robert Duvall, who had previously worked with Philip Kaufman on The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (1972), happened to be in San Francisco at the time of filming, and shot his only scene for free. He plays a crazy priest playing on a swing. It's supposed to foreshadow the pod person anomie and alienation we feel later in the movie. (Source: IMDb)

So Robert Duvall died. Terrible news - he was an outstanding actor, great range - made every film/show he did better. I always liked this scene from Apocalypse Now where he forces his soldiers to go surfing in the middle of a combat zone because the waves were just too good.
