Over the last decade I’ve helped several hundred families fight to get better support for their children. Right now the special education needs system is not working for too many children, too many parents and too many schools. The Government has tried to fix things but I fear that they have left parents with more questions than answers. Their changes will leave young people to the lottery of the system and place too much burden on teachers. We need to focus on real support for those who need it and start asking why the number of children with special education needs has increased so much in recent years.

Today, the Senate HELP Committee voted to advance bipartisan legislation I introduced with Senators Tim Kaine and Lisa Murkowski to prevent the Department of Education from transferring critical offices responsible for special education and rehabilitative services, postsecondary education, elementary and secondary education, and Indian education to other federal agencies that lack the staff and expertise needed to execute their missions. One of the offices protected by our bill manages programs established under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, known as IDEA, that help meet the educational needs of more than 8 million children with disabilities. Moving this work to the Department of Health and Human Services fundamentally misunderstands the purpose of the Special Education program. It is focused primarily on students’ educational needs, not their health care needs. Every American, regardless of background or disability, deserves access to a quality public education. These important landmark programs must remain at the Department of Education, where Congress specifically placed them and where they belong.

Today Lydia † 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and myself met with the Victims Minister and the Victims’ Commissioner for England and Wales to discuss how we can improve the criminal justice system across the country. We spoke about the need for law reform, better support for survivors, research into the experiences and needs of children born as a result of rape, and improved training for the professionals who work with them. We also discussed the urgent need to improve the housing system to ensure survivors are safe and properly supported. The Government must also begin holding professionals to account for the negligence and corruption that has failed victims across the UK. Survivors deserve justice, accountability, and meaningful change, not just promises.
