I've gotten feedback to try adding a delay to the caption after each word is spoken. While that does makes it more realistic, I think it ends up feeling too sluggish. I prefer when the words appear as they're being said. What do you think?

For comparison, hereโ€™s the version without the pre-delay. Iโ€™ve also tweaked the word-by-word delay to vary based on each wordโ€™s length. Also, each line now has it's own background box! I like the jagged shapes it creates!

If you go this route, you should also put in a really really small chance to misspell or mistype the word and then have it backtrack and catch up. As a kid I was always fascinated watching the live captions just in case they messed up.

The most micro amount of delay, like not even a second. Maybe that will be best of both worlds?

Honestly, if you're going for an unsettling vibe the sluggishness feels a little more appropriate to me. It's dreamlike, dissociative, more conducive to something nightmarish

The first was better

As someone who uses captions to help understand what's being said (I've got auditory processing issues), having it delayed just makes it even harder to understand

You dont need to add a consistent delay like that, you just need to add an effect that has the word scroll in a character at a time, instead of appearing Live steno is actually character by character, the pause between words appearing is the time it takes to tupe out the word

Stenographers donโ€™t type out words a character at a time. They use Stenotype Machines check it out

Maybe just a tiny bit. Exact timing feels too much like modern tiktok subtitles now. punches me in the face.

I wanted a similar feeling for a game i was working on but i took a very different approach. Having each letter typed out with a very procedual delay which tries to simulate how someone would type on a keyboard. Spelling mistakes, burst typing, keyboard layout and all

Matthew McConaughey reveals the three words his dad said that changed his life โ€œI said dad, I don't want to go to law school anymore. I want to go to film school and after about a 5 second pause, he goes, โ€˜Are you sure that's what you want to do?โ€™ I reply yes sirโ€ โ€œAnother long pause. Then I hear, โ€˜Well, don't halfass itโ€™โ€ โ€œI remember just beaming, hopping up just like Yes! My dad not only said okay. The way he said don't halfass it, it was also, okay. Let's go big boy. Own that shit. Get some leverage. Get some horsepower behind where you're going. Go do itโ€ โ€œI remember to this day and I've learned this later I think from becoming a father, part of what I believe happened to him and why he said that to me that way on that call was the way that I asked him. I wasn't really asking. It was, โ€˜I don't want to go to law school, Dad. I want to go to film school.โ€™ I didn't stutter. He heard his son saying this is what I want to doโ€ โ€œWhat I think happened to him in that moment is what I think any father, any parent loves. You raise your kids in a certain way and you give them a guideline, a ladder to climb and here's the guidelines and if you do it this way, you're most likely going to have some success in life and it'll work out for you and then when we do it that way, we can be proud parentsโ€ โ€œBut what do we really want to happen when our kids are out of the house and they're on their own? We kind of want them to call one day and go, โ€˜I'm breaking out. I'm going my own way.โ€™ And as a parent, we go, as much as it may scare us, we're going, โ€˜Yes!โ€™ I gave my kid the confidence and the courage and the foundation to say they're going to go their own wayโ€ โ€œIn a way, I think every parent honors and loves that moment. I heard my dad, when he didn't hear me stutter, when he heard me directly say what I said. I wasn't really asking him. Even though I was out of respect asking him, the way I said it, I wasn't asking him and I think he felt thatโ€ โ€œDon't halfass itโ€
