#Syria: water releases from the #Euphrates Dam ceased today due to the suspension of water inflows from Turkey. The Dam will now maintain a normal discharge rate of ~700 m³/s for electricity generation. Water levels in the Euphrates river are expected to return to normal within 72 hours. The move will bring an end to the largest water release in decades, which caused widespread flooding in areas along the Euphrates in Raqqa & Deir Ezzor countryside.

Syrian government forces have pushed into the Tabqa/Thawra area and have secured the Euphrates lifeline - the dams, the power grid, and the river corridor that keep northeast Syria running. This isn’t symbolic terrain. It’s state infrastructure: electricity, water control, and the main strategic gateway toward Raqqa. All of this comes after the SDF publicly announced a redeployment east of the Euphrates under an internationally mediated arrangement - then immediately turned around and claimed “betrayal” as Damascus continued advancing and fighting flared around Tabqa and nearby oil areas. In other words: SDF sign a pullback, then try to use conflict to preserve their leverage. Here’s the reality: a militia doesn’t get to hold Syria’s critical infrastructure hostage and call it “self-rule.” The SDF can complain about “integration” all it wants, but when the ground shifts, complaints don’t stop an army - and Damascus still has significant forces that haven’t even been fully committed yet. Washington is calling for a pause between Aleppo and Tabqa because it sees the escalation risk. But the strategic direction is obvious: Damascus is reasserting sovereignty west of the Euphrates, and the road to Raqqa is opening. Raqqa may not be easy - but momentum like this doesn’t slow down on its own.

Civil Defense warned that the Euphrates, which has doubled in width in some areas, will continue to rise and could increase by another meter. Water levels in the Euphrates had already dropped by ~60 cm over the past 36 hours. Asharaa bridge has been temporarily repaired and reopened today to light vehicles & pedestrians (see video). Several drinking water (pumping) stations also resumed operations following the decline in river levels.
