An outrageous claim from Chris Hipkins: New Zealanders don’t “really care” about the details of one of Labour’s flagship election policies — the Future Fund. The Herald’s Jamie Ensor appears to be one of the few gallery journalists actually holding Hipkins and Labour to account. Chris Hipkins has now admitted that the party’s flagship promise of “three free doctors’ visits a year” might not involve seeing a doctor at all. According to Labour’s own policy, these so-called “free doctors’ visits” can be used with nurse practitioners instead. The party openly admits this, yet it cannot even say how many of those visits will actually be with a real doctor. Meanwhile, Labour is marketing the policy as “free doctors’ visits” to win votes, only to quietly concede it’s just another primary care appointment. Off the back of 3 free GP visits and GP clinic loans, Hipkins is asked: “How does Labour intend to source more doctors when there is already a GP shortage?” His answer. 50 extra doctors who started University in 2024, will be finishing their study in the next few years. However, Labour’s proposed GP visit scheme would take effect from July 1, 2027 and the doctors who started in 2024 won’t be qualified GP’s until 2035 at the earliest.

Yesterday, Chris Hipkins publicly criticised Genesis Energy for not dipping into its own pockets to fund new generation projects, completely unaware that the company is in fact committing $1.6 billion to new generation. For the Labour leader to be so out of touch with the basic details of major new generation projects at a company in which the government holds a 51% stake, is a masterclass in incompetence. Hipkins then claimed there is "manufactured scarcity" in electricity supply, completely ignoring the massive barrier of resource consents, which this government's Fast-track Approvals Act is designed to address. Hipkins rounded off by criticising the proposed LNG terminal - while failing to make any mention of the record levels of Indonesian coal imported by Labour - which ironically coincided with his govt declaring a climate emergency.

If Hipkins and Labour return to govt, they look set to take another crack at hate speech laws. Appearing on TVNZ Breakfast this morning, Hipkins was asked about the need for such laws in light of Brian Tamaki’s comments. He replied: “I still think there are legitimate issues here, gaps in the law.” A pretty clear signal they’ll try again — despite their last push drawing around 19,000 submissions, the vast majority opposed on free speech grounds.
