The real reason for the liquid metal is that The Abyss flopped but Cameron wanted to show off the liquid CGI so he reused it here. I always wanted an explanation how the liquid metal machine worked.

D’ailleurs, il avait déclaré dans le magazine Mad Movies quand Terminator 3 sortait qu’il voulait que T3 soit à T2 ce que T2 était à T1 et qu’il lui aura fallu au moins 250 millions de $ pour réaliser sa vison. Cela était impensable à la fin des années 90, début des années 2000.

Not exactly. Cameron didn’t want to work with the original studio again, but they owned the rights, so he couldn’t stop them from making T2 with someone else. (They reportedly considered hiring John McTiernan who directed Die Hard.)
