John: There is a lot of opposition to building in America, broadly. That's just the nature of our society. I was thinking about, what do Americans want to build? Because it's easy to look at the data center stuff and be like, "Well, everyone's against building data centers." I was reflecting on the whole reindustrialization meme this weekend. And I was thinking about the actual knock-on effects of reindustrialization — most people don't want a car factory in their town. I actually think people don't really want change. They don't want things built. Data centers are probably at the bottom of the list. They're the least popular. But people don't want stuff built, generally. There are very few things that people are like, "Yeah, I'd be down for that to be built." People like the status quo. They're happy with things as they are. And they don't like change. People block home construction all the time. Also, permitting and expansion of existing homes. I'm not saying that they're as unpopular as data centers. Data centers are at the bottom. But new housing in communities is like razor's edge. I do think there's an element of like, Americans don't want to build anything.

And so it's making their earnings inflate.” “So he's claiming they're cooking the books. Google first made this change in Q1 of 2021, where they said the servers are now going from 3 to 4 years. Separately in 2021, Google took networking equipment from 3 to 5 years. And then in 2023, they took it from 5 to 6 years.” “And so this is a result of this effort where they went in and did an analysis. "One of the very confusing things about the models right now: how to reconcile the fact that they are doing so well on evals. And you look at the evals and you go, 'Those are pretty hard evals.' But the economic impact seems to be dramatically behind. There is [a possible] explanation. I ask myself, “What do I buy that is really the picks and shovels? And what do I buy that is actually a direct ownership of the tech equivalent to, let's say a stable coin or Bitcoin itself?" My conclusion has been if I wanna play the long-term, the next five years or even 10 years in AI, I need to own data centers. I need to own real estate where data centers are built. I need to own power contracts that power the data centers. I've seen this movie so many times before, once you convinced as an investor that this is gonna be here for a while.

My job is to communicate the facts, and that's what I do. 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, data centers in Virginia, where they started, used a lot of water and it caused prices to go up when it was attached to the grid. Well, you cannot attach the grid anymore. The Utah project contemplates bringing new power to Utah. All of the power will be created from nat gas pipeline that runs through there, and will give back to the community. It will generate enough power that some percentage of it will go back to the grid. If you want China to overtake our ability to develop cutting edge technology, you stop data centers. So that's the cause and effect of it all. If you want China to lead, take over our, let's call it democracy, our free speech, and the way we live with technology, just stop building data centers. It's that simple.
