Taylor Lorenz on the data center backlash: "I went on Eric Newcomer's podcast recently, because I'm in this community group in LA, and they found out that there's a data center in downtown LA. It's not a hyperscale. The comments are like, this is why I've been feeling off,...

I love Taylor describing a “medieval panic” totally unironically while wearing a KN95 in the year 2026.

serious question does anyone tell her she is insane for masking in 2026 or is everyone just feeding the delusion?

That TAYLOR LORENZ is such a reasonable voice in the data center “debate” should make anti data center people to be ashamed of themselves. This is the kookiest of the kookiest when it comes to health paranoia and tech and even HER realizes the anti data center people are freaks.

I thought this roughly 59-year-old journalist's 15 minutes of fame were over in like 2022

It's crazy that Taylor Lorenz is on the right side of something for once. Yeah, if you mention to these people that their facts and sources are wrong, they don't just double down. They exaggerate further. It's exactly like the 5G panic. The end of the world until it's not.

I love the appearance of trying to be objective and reasonable while she’s wearing a pointless face diaper. Mental illness at this point.

it's incredibly frustrating that most people just repeat whatever nonsense they've heard without thinking or even investigating for themselves.

Guys, I'm still waiting to die from no Net Neutrality. Forgive me if I don't buy into this "data centers are the end of the world" nonsense.

She’s absolutely correct. It’s just the latest fad to hate. While at the same time, these companies need to make sure electricity doesn’t spike and destroy communities. It shouldn’t be a hard problem

When normal people are facing an onslaught of 1 Trillion dollar spending by BigTech where they tell you they don’t care about any of us, you have to blame BigTech for the mess. Not the people.

Uh, no, building a warehouse (which is all a data center is, it's a warehouse for computers) should NEVER disrupt the water table. It is way too deep for basic building construction to ever affect it. And it was conveniently only that one house near the data center? What about their neighbors?

James Fishback says Byron Donalds is LYING about data centers! Says this has nothing to do with China and it’s all about GREED. “There are 4,200 data centers in the United States. There are 470 in China. We've already won the AI war. My grandfather was a computer science major at Florida Atlantic University about 30 minutes south of here in Boca. And he would tell you that in the 1970s and 80s, computers were the size of Costco warehouses and now those same computers fit in our pocket. Why are we building an AI data center that in five years is going to be obsolete, is going to be one one hundredth of the size. And so I fear it's because a lot of the big land developers want to buy up cheap land, flip it for the next AI data center. So it's a greedy thing. It's a greed thing. And I don't want that to happen in our state because you know what? If you buy something and you screw up, you can return it. You could sell it. If you pave over citrus groves or the Everglades or a wetlands to build the data center, you cannot easily undo that. And so I don't want our farmers, I don't want our rural towns to be run roughshod over. My opponent, Byron Donalds, will say, well, what about the AI data center? Don't they have property rights? And I would say to him, what about the property rights of the people who live a hundred feet from the data center? Where there is EMF, where there is audible noise pollution, where there is the potential even for small radioactive waves? What happens in that case? Do they not have property rights? They don't have to live next to something like that.”

David Sacks: Trump’s Instincts on AI and Data Centers Are Right @jason: “Trump is going to turn out to be right about this data center issue.” David Sacks: “I have told you guys before that Trump is ultimately the best friend of innovators in Washington. If anybody could make the decision about technology in DC, I'd want it to be President Trump. Not cabinet secretaries, not the White House staff, not members of Congress, not senators, not think tanks, I would really want every decision, if he had the time, to be made by President Trump because his instincts on this are really good. He wants America to win. He does not believe in unnecessary regulation. He doesn't have all these doomer anxieties. He listens to a broad cross-section of people. I mean, he talks to all the CEOs. He is very up to speed on all these issues. And I spoke to this at the G20 this past week. There are great deals for local communities to be had. This is the point that I think needs to be made, the reason why local communities should embrace this is not because of some abstract concern about innovation. They should do it when the deal is good for them, and there are good deals to be had. We've seen that in Loudoun County, Virginia, property taxes went down by $6,000 because they're getting all this data center revenue. In Louisiana, there's a county that was able to give teachers their first bonus in years because of data center revenue. So we're starting to see all these examples where if you make the right deal, it will lower your electricity costs because they will stand up net new power generation, they will pay for grid upgrades. It does not use an excessive amount of water, that's total fake news. We know the systems recirculate. And these data centers can be put in places where they're not bothering people. So there is a good deal to be made there and ultimately, just one last point on this, President Trump supports local choice on this. I'm seeing all this fake news, you know, Democrats saying that the administration's trying to shove these data centers down the throats of local communities. Not true. In the policy document that I worked on, we expressly said that data centers remain a state and local decision. So no one is forcing these local communities, but what the president is saying is, ‘Don't believe this media disinformation campaign. It can be a good deal for you if you're willing to embrace it.’”
