I have mixed feelings about this. First, I want to commend him for admitting he made a mistake. It sounds sincere and the first part is owning up to your mistake and learning. Many people don’t do that. They always try to assign blame. Now you might say he’s assigning blame because he’s saying it was consensual, but you know what? These were adult women and yes, there is a power dynamic, but I can tell you this —when I was back in college almost every goddamn professor was sleeping with their students. I slept with one (or was it two?) 🤔 It’s been going on since the beginning of time. So I partly get why he thinks it was OK. He never forced himself on anyone and as my daughter said she can almost guarantee 90% of those women do not regret having slept with him and she herself would’ve probably slept with him. This is incredibly vague. A power imbalance could mean a lot of things. Should men not sleep with any woman cause they are stronger then them? strength is power, so its a power imbalance.

That reasoning is exactly where people get it wrong. Consent alone doesn’t cancel power dynamics. When there’s authority, influence, or dependency like teacher student, yes can still be shaped by pressure, fear, admiration, or imbalance, even if it looks voluntary on the surface. That’s why those boundaries exist in the first place. So saying we were all adults, so it’s fine is a very narrow way of looking at it. Legally adult doesn’t always mean ethically equal. Power changes what consent really means in practice. That’s the part he’s ignoring and that’s why the situation is controversial, not just consensual.
