James Gandolfini’s final film was The Drop. His performance is breathtaking. Part of why I still have a hard time accepting Gandolfini’s passing is because he had so, so much more to give. Gandolfini found his post-Sopranos groove. Films like Killing Them Softly, Enough Said & The Drop resulted in some of the best work of Jim’s career. I don’t think I’ll ever get over his passing.

Ben Affleck gave a really strong performance in the George Clooney-directed film The Tender Bar. Affleck’s performance is heartfelt & mature. I thought this had an opening for a potential Oscar nomination, but it’s still some of Ben’s best work as an actor. An overall good film.

James Gandolfini makes a leap as Tony Soprano in the show’s second season. As I rewatch this show for now the 6th time, it’s clear to me that season 2 is where Jim really stepped into Tony as both a mob boss & a man on the verge of a mental breakdown. He’s just so good here.

Robert Redford & Robert Duvall are both gone. This scene in The Natural…man, it’s hard not to get emotional. Rewatching this film takes on a new meaning now. The world could collapse tomorrow, but at least we’ll still have this film. I’m grateful as hell these two made movies.

Rewatching The Outsiders always takes me back to vivid memories of 7th grade- it’s such a time machine in the best way imaginable. I know this movie comes with flaws & it’s not Coppola’s best work, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a younger, more talented cast than this film.

David Fincher ended The Social Network on the perfect note. I think about this ending often & it’s one of the reasons I put this film in the running for the century’s best. Zuckerberg has everything by this point in the film but he’s as lonely & insecure as ever. Poetic justice.

Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely exceptional in #Anemone. I understand this is a polarizing film that not everyone will embrace but I love this movie & I love DDL’s performance. He’s electric & delivers some incredibly memorable monologues. It’s so good to see him back on screen.

The Al Pacino Birthday Weekend Marathon is so far from over. I finished The Godfather Part III last night & as I wrote yesterday, I think this film deserves more love than it receives. Pacino isn’t as good here as the first two, but man he’s still spectacular in this movie. 🎂

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood released six years ago today & with every rewatch, I feel affirmed in my belief that this is 1) the best Leo performance ever 2) the best Brad performance ever & 3) Tarantino’s best film. Disagree? I suggest revisiting this film. It’s perfect.

Insomnia is the only film Christopher Nolan & Al Pacino united on & I think it’s perhaps the most underrated movie of Nolan’s filmography. Yes- this is a slow burn, I get that. But it’s an intimate performance from Pacino with nuanced direction from Nolan. This film is good. 🎂
