📺 Legacy media USMCA negotiation reporting has been all over the map. Everything from the impacts of blowing up the trade deal to full-scale retaliation if the 50% tariff is imposed. A few truths: 1⃣ Although this is headline news in 🇨🇦, the 🇺🇸 DOES NOT CARE about it. There’s no media coverage. Bluster about 🇨🇦 hitting back is all for internal consumption. This is just another day at the office for USTR Jamieson Greer. He has dozens of trade deals (not MOUs) incorporating tariffs. 2⃣ 🇨🇦 dropping the auto tariffs, booze bans & opening up supply mgmt is the minimum to avoid the 50% tariffs. 3⃣ If a deal is reached before August 19, it’s just the beginning. 🇨🇦 gets the access that 🇲🇽 has for more detailed talks dealing with rules of origins, forced labour in supply chains & other issues culminating in an interim agreement that will likely be reviewed annually. 4⃣ If a deal is not reached before August 19, USMCA doesn’t end. The 232 and 301 tariffs remain & the pain of more tariffs, potentially from both sides, begins. 🇨🇦 has far more to lose than the 🇺🇸 if this happens. 💪 Here’s the power dynamic in plain terms. Retaliation is not the answer to the USMCA war. 1⃣ It failed over the last 18 months & in the original negotiations in 2017. 2⃣ The provincial premiers with the most leverage don’t support it. 3⃣ Waiting it out won’t work. US tariff policy is here to stay. 4⃣ The alcohol bans are uniting Republicans & Democrats. Choosing to fight with Trump for political gain is sacrificing our economy. 🍷 Drop the bans, rescind the auto tariffs, get serious about enforcing rules of origin/forced labour in supply chains & open up supply mgmt. 💪 Package critical minerals, resource development, continental defense (eg. commit fully to F35s) & no more cozying up to 🇨🇳 as bargaining chips. China responded to Washington’s proposal to impose tariffs of up to 100% on buyers of Russian energy, including China: Beijing will take all necessary measures against illegal unilateral sanctions with no basis in international law and no UNSC authorization. Translation: Don’t forget who lost the trade wars. The more Washington weaponizes tariffs, the fewer weapons it has left. China’s trade dependence on the U.S. has already fallen to a historic low. Chinese exports are moving to ASEAN, Europe, Latin America, and the rest of the world. So another 100% tariff threat is not strength. It is Washington confessing that its old leverage is shrinking.
