Skate 3 has been 100% recompiled for PC. It's reached it's 2.0 update which introduces a fully native renderer enabling 2x+ the FPS at 1/4 the GPU power, and Apple Silicon went from 25 to 250 FPS at 4K. Originally starting with rexglue, progression has advanced far enough to fully abandon its reliance on emulation via xenia for GPU rendering. This is proof of what's possible, there is plenty to be excited for! Go try it out!!

The first governmental application in Pakistan marks an important milestone by becoming operational for a full month on the Internet Computer Protocol (DFINITY Foundation). The application was created using the caffeine platform and has remained stable during four weeks of live operation in the country’s digital stack. That may single-handedly save private credit and reduce the financing rates for GPUs, which will drive demand and help finance the build-out. "The disaggregation of prefill and inference is going to be amazing for the useful lives of GPU and may single-handedly save private credit. Private credit is in pain from these SaaS loans. But there's a lot of private credit in GPUs too. They were underwriting that to 3-4. The disaggregation of inference means that these GPUs are going to have 10 or 15-year lives. The AI skeptics are like, "Oh, these companies are all cooking their books. The useful life of a GPU is only a year or two. The useful life of a CPU is only four years because the rapid technological change." No. What rapid technological change has done with the disaggregation of prefill and inference is you can put a Cerebras system or Groq LPUs effectively in front of a Hopper or even an Ampere, use that Hopper and Ampere for prefill, and extend the useful life of that GPU until it melts. This is going to be really good for the whole private credit industry. It's gonna help finance the AI build-out. Because if you can start to finance GPUs at 5% or 6% instead of – I think CoreWeave's lowest financing was low sevens – that actually mathematically changes the cost to finance this build-out."

In feature film VFX, our lighting teams spend a lot of time shaving off as much render time as possible. Even 1 minute saved per frame adds up. For a 5 second shot, 1 minute less per frame saves you 2 hours of rendering per shot. Our shots are usually a lot heavier than this and our teams usually get a lot more optimization for render times than 1 minute per frame. Some shots can be rendering for up to 30 hours per frame depending on complexity. Large studios have a plethora of optimization tools which shave off a lot of render time from our shots. Rendering technology is always improving, bringing render times down and increasing physical accuracy. Video is of Hyperion with interactive rendering with Pixar's RenderMan XPU renderer, which is up to 5x faster than their older RIS architecture.

PowerInfer - a high-speed inference engine for deploying LLMs locally. Just came across this super interesting project on speeding up inference. It's not MoE but it's a simple approach that exploits the high locality in LLM inference to design a GPU-CPU hybrid inference engine. Hot-activated neurons are preloaded onto the GPU for fast access, while cold-activated neurons (the majority) are computed on the CPU. This approach significantly reduces GPU memory demands and CPU-GPU data transfer. It achieves an average token generation rate of 13.20 tokens/s, with a peak of 29.08 tokens/s, across various LLMs on a single NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU. It's on only 18% lower than that achieved by a top-tier server-grade A100 GPU. It also significantly outperforms llama.cpp by up to 11.69x while retaining model accuracy. There is a lot more innovation around inference that's coming fast. Really encouraged by the study on sparse computation to enhance the computational efficiency of LLMs. It's now possible to use PowerInfer with Llama 2 and Faclon 40B. Mistral-7B support is coming soon!

Three of us graphics Sega #Dreamcast devs have been up all night trying to migrate #Doom 64's renderer to the new "hybrid rendering scheme" which we implemented within the KallistiOS indie SDK awhile back. To make a long story short, the new rendering scheme submits opaque and transparent geometry to the GPU via two disjoint mechanisms: using the SH4 store queues and the DMA, allowing for interleaving of OP and TR polygons (not something you can do with direct poly submission on the PVR): saving RAM, and boosting perf by allowing the CPU to get a head start on the next frame while the TR polys are being DMA'd to the GPU asynchronously... Pretty sweet. THAT IS WHEN THE DAMN THING FULLY COOPERATES! This is the first time it's been flexed beyond just tech demos and testbeds... Been wading through PVR GPU IRQ handler hell trying to work through some of the corner cases which have only now manifested in an environment this intense (timing issues, vertex data corruption, etc)... ...So here, enjoy a highly curated direct HW capture ONLY of it actually working correctly and looking kick-ass! ;) Oh, and check out the bumpmapping jnmartin added to the weapons! #gamedev #retrogaming #cplusplus
