Good for him. Historically, I had to be at my desk by 7 am and log into the mandatory monitoring software that tracks my apps and open tabs to ensure I'm on task. No puttering for us peasants.

Yeah, he doesn’t make a decision till 10 AM and then he stops making decisions at 12 PM and then he makes a decision at 5 PM on what to eat. This is all bullshit.

Imagine you are the CEO. Are you there to make your $billion? Or, to grow the company. How do you identify the liars in the myriad of managers beneath you? How do you identify the brains of the outfit? Bezos is the founder. He cares about the company. His heir? $Billion.

This is one of the smartest productivity ideas honestly: protect your cognitive energy instead of spending it randomly. Most people treat every hour of the day the same, even though their mind clearly isn’t operating at the same level all day. Bezos understands that his real value is not attending endless meetings. It’s making a few high-quality decisions with a clear mind. Also interesting that he protects slow mornings instead of glorifying chaos. The highest performers are often calmer than people expect.

Bezos makes 3 good decisions a day. Buffett makes 3 a year. With AI, you make 3 good decisions every 10 minutes — because AI eliminates the bad options in seconds, and you only decide what's left.

Not sure how this is helpful for anyone but Bezos. I'm very familiar with AMZ's way of working, and their "leadership principles" do not allow the average wagie to "putter" before 10 am or ignore things in the afternoon

Well great but he built a platform that is a nightmare for sellers. Chock full of paranoia and robotic responses. A big bloated mothership that acts like minority report. No matter how long you have "endured' there ,when it is time for elimination, they fall back to their business section to assemble the firing squad.

Jeff must've been sleeping less and baking badly a few years ago, because Amazon worked great for years, this year it glitches and freezes all the time and makes it really hard for you to make a purchase. The whole point for his customers was the convenience, so he lost the plot.

Jeff Bezos on why he protects his mornings, his sleep, and his decision-making: Bezos is asked about his unusual routine. No meetings before 10 a.m., eight hours of sleep, no PowerPoints. He walks through the philosophy behind it. He starts with the morning: "I like to putter in the morning. I get up early. I go to bed early. I get up early. I like to putter in the mornings. I like to read the newspaper. I like to have coffee. I like to have breakfast with my kids before they go to school." That puttering time, he says, is non-negotiable. It's why his first meeting is at 10. And the timing of meetings isn't accidental either: "I like to do my high IQ meetings before lunch. Like anything that's going to be really mentally challenging, that's a 10 o'clock meeting. And because by 5:00 p.m. I'm like, I can't think about that today. Let's try this again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m." Then he gets to sleep. He prioritises eight hours, and frames it not as self-care but as a job requirement: "I think better. I have more energy. My mood is better… As a senior executive, what do you really get paid to do? As a senior executive, you get paid to make a small number of high quality decisions. Your job is not to make thousands of decisions every day. Is that really worth it if the quality of those decisions might be lower because you're tired or grouchy or any number of things?" Bezos is careful to note this isn't universal advice. A 100-person startup is a different story. But Amazon isn't a startup, and at his level the math changes, fewer decisions, higher stakes, longer time horizons. Which leads to the part of the philosophy that ties it all together. He doesn't think his executives should be focused on the current quarter at all: "They work in the future. They live in the future. None of the people who report to me should really be focused on the current quarter… We'll have a good quarterly conference call and Wall Street will like our quarterly results and people will stop me and say, 'Congratulations on your quarter,' and I say thank you. But what I'm really thinking is that quarter was baked 3 years ago. Right now I'm working on a quarter that's going to reveal itself in 2021 sometime." The whole system, the slow morning, the protected sleep, the morning-only hard meetings, the three-year horizon points at one thing: "If I make like three good decisions a day, that's enough."

Jeff Bezos reveals why sleeping 4 hours a day would make him a worse CEO, not a better one: "On sleep I get 8 hours of sleep. I prioritize it unless I'm traveling in different time zones. Sometimes it's impossible but I am very focused on it. I think better, I have more energy, my mood is better" "Think about it as a senior executive, what do you really get paid to do? You get paid to make a small number of high-quality decisions. Your job is not to make thousands of decisions every day" "Let's say that I slept 6 hours a day. Well, let's go really crazy and say I slept 4 hours a day. Now I just got four so-called productive hours back. If I was going to have 12 hours of productive time during any waking day, now all of a sudden I have 16 productive hours. So I have 33% more time to make decisions. If I was going to make a hundred decisions, now I can make 133 decisions" "Is that really worth it if the quality of those decisions might be lower because you're tired or grouchy or any number of things?" "It's different if it's a startup company. When Amazon was a hundred people it's a different story. But Amazon's not a startup company and all of our senior executives operate the same way I do. They work in the future. They live in the future" "None of the people who report to me should really be focused on the current quarter. Sometimes we'll have a good quarterly conference call and Wall Street will like our quarterly results and people will stop me and say congratulations on your quarter. I say thank you, but what I'm really thinking is that quarter was baked three years ago. Right now I'm working on a quarter that's going to reveal itself sometime in the future" "Why do I need to make a hundred decisions today? If I make three good decisions a day that's enough. And they should just be as high quality as I can make them. Warren Buffett says he's good if he makes three good decisions a year"

Tyrese Haliburton reveals what Kevin Durant did after his Achilles injury that changed how he thinks about the word respect, and how much he cares about if he gets it “And after I got hurt, I realized how many people have checked on me. Checked on me, like, actually checked on me, how I'm doing. Not just, like, ‘How you doing?’ and keep it pushing. Like, have come and visited me or whatever. That's what I really value and what I really care about from people that I love and I respect. That's what matters to me.” “I don't know if, as a competitor, do I feel like I'll ever get the respect that I deserve? Probably not. But I view it in a sense of, like, it doesn't really matter because basketball, I can only play for a finite amount of time. And then when I retire, people are going to have debates and it won't really matter because it's all people's opinion and the way that they view the game of basketball.” “I hope that they respect the man that I am and the person I am. That's what matters more to me. As far as a basketball player, you can't please everybody, bro. Everybody's gonna have a problem with my game or something that I do. I don't shoot enough. It doesn't look the way it's supposed to look. I don't defend well enough. Like, it could be whatever.” “I don't care. As long as my teammates, everybody, as long as they respect me, that matters more to me. And the guys who are like my superheroes to me growing up, KD, Steph, Bron, like, go down the line, I feel like they respect me. And in the game of basketball, if those guys respect me, I don't give a shit what anybody else thinks. You know what I mean? Like, truthfully. So I know it's a loaded answer, but it's kind of just the way I view it.” “That's what I'm saying. And people I look up to, I can go down the line, especially those three, because to me, in my generation, that's like the big three. When I got hurt, KD flew to Indy to visit me. He was out there for All-Star, but he came early to come see me. Came to my crib. He was chilling with my dog, throwing the toy with my dog, like, to check on me. I was like, ‘Okay, he's forever. We forever cool.’” “You know, Bron and Steph both called and checked on me. When I got shingles and I said what I was going through, they both called me, checked on me. LeBron, during the Finals, I got so many voice memos from Bron during the Finals, which was like the craziest thing ever. But that's like the big three to me. So the fact that they show love, I'm like, in the world of basketball, what else matters? You know what I'm saying?”
