UNIFY UNDER THE BANNER OF THE UNITED STATES OF AFRICA It's an intergenerational struggle that goes back at least one century: The fight for Africa's total unification. Long understood to be the key to Africa's freedom and the emancipation of Africans everywhere, the goal of creating a 'United States of Africa' was articulated as early as 1887 by the Kansas African Emigration Association. This would influence great Pan-African leaders from Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) to Kwame Nkrumah (1909-72). The understanding that unification is the pathway towards Africa's freedom led countries such as Mali to state in their constitution, 'For the achievement of African Unity (XV), the Republic of Mali may conclude with any African state agreements of association or of a community comprising the partial or total abandonment of sovereignty of Mali (Article 117).' It led Tanganyika to unite with Zanzibar to establish Tanzania and Mali to temporarily unite with Senegal. Today, the struggle continues, as the countries of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, fight for unification under a Pan-African federation. Civilians and government officials within the bloc have been clear that their end goal is total African unity. To some, this might sound unrealistic. How can a continent that is so vast and so diverse possibly unite? It is so called because of the terror and destruction that defined this period. Africa’s indigenous development was interrupted, its monuments vandalized, its treasures looted, its knowledge systems suppressed and its history distorted by parasites who had no interest in “civilizing” anyone. Through more than 450 years of oppression at the hands of these parasites, Africans resisted, from the Khoisan and Herero-Nama Uprisings of 1659 and 1904 respectively in Southern Africa, to Ethiopia crushing its would-be colonizer, Italy, at the fabled Battle of Adwa in 1896, to the Mau Mau Uprising of 1952 in Eastern Africa, to the wave of independence that would sweep across the continent only a few years later. This long history of African resistance, Pan-Africanist activism, and the relative liberty that would ultimately be won by it, is encoded in the national flags of many African countries today. So what’s happening now is Africa’s population is continuing to rise—it’s the only place in the world with rapid population growth—and all the others are declining. Everyone else has peaked or is just about to peak or actually beginning a decline. Africa’s population today is 1.5 billion. By 2050 it’ll be 2.5 billion. That’s a lot, adding a billion people in the next quarter century. If you go even farther and just try to extrapolate based on current trends, Africa’s population reaches about 3.5 billion. According to the UN’s most recent forecast, 3.7 billion by the end of the 21st century. And Africa goes from being 9% of the world population to being more than 30% of the world population. It’s going to be a completely different world. What do I say to African leaders every time? Be Africa-wide. So what’s happening now is Africa’s population is continuing to rise—it’s the only place in the world with rapid population growth—and all the others are declining. Everyone else has peaked or is just about to peak or actually beginning a decline. Africa’s population today is 1.5 billion. By 2050 it’ll be 2.5 billion. That’s a lot, adding a billion people in the next quarter century. If you go even farther and just try to extrapolate based on current trends, Africa’s population reaches about 3.5 billion. According to the UN’s most recent forecast, 3.7 billion by the end of the 21st century. And Africa goes from being 9% of the world population to being more than 30% of the world population. It’s going to be a completely different world. What do I say to African leaders every time? Be Africa-wide. Mahatma Gandhi was an anti-Black racist, who advocated a three-tiered apartheid in South Africa. While living in South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi described black Africans as “savage,” “raw” and living a life of indolence and nakedness. He routinely expressed "disdain for Africans," and he also campaigned relentlessly to prove to the British rulers that the Indian community in South Africa was superior to native black Africans. One of the first battles Gandhi fought after coming to South Africa was over the separate entrances for whites and blacks at the Durban post office. Gandhi obiected that Indians were "classed with the natives of South Africa," who he called the kaffirs, and demanded a separate entrance for Indians. In a petition letter in 1895, Gandhi also expressed concern that a lower legal standing for Indians would result in degenerating "so much so that from their civilised habits, they would be degraded to the habits of the aboriginal Natives, and a generation hence, between the progeny of the Indians and the Natives, there will be very little difference in habits, and customs and thought."
