Patrick Swayze on how to handle Pain in life: "With all the skydiving, surfing, chase scenes, and fight scenes, 'Point Break' (1991) was one of the most fun movies I’ve ever worked on. It was also one of the most painful, as I cracked my left wrist and a couple of ribs, and tore up my shoulder and elbow. The worst injury didn’t come while we were shooting, though. It came when I was bored out of my mind back at the trailers. I’d been hanging around a parking lot all day, waiting to be called to shoot a scene. I walked over to the prop truck and said, “Hey, you guys got a skateboard?” “Sure,” said one of the guys, and grabbed one from the back. “Here you go,” he said. “Don’t ki|| yourself.” I just laughed and said thanks, and then hopped on the board. It shot out from under me, and I fell straight down onto my elbow, which drove my arm bone right up into my shoulder, tearing tendons and my rotator cuff. I was dizzy with pain, but knew that if I let anyone know I was hurt, there would be repercussions with the movie’s insurers. So I just acted as if everything was okay. Whether I’m dancing, playing sports, acting, or anything else, I try never to allow pain to derail me. Pain is a constant companion when you make action movies. It’s also just a part of living with a serious knee injury. But I learned how to put the pain elsewhere, how to compartmentalize what was happening in my body. Pain is nothing more than a sensation, and you can choose to give in to it, or choose to control it. It’s how I managed to sustain my career for this long, and even how I’ve managed to fight cancer. Pain, like fear, can even be your friend if you let it. It sharpens your focus, and lets you know you’re alive." ("The Time of My Life", Patrick Swayze & Lisa Niemi, 2009) P.S: On this day, 35 years ago, "Point Break" (1991) was released in the USA and Canada.

Caller: Yeah, thanks for taking my call. So, basically, I'm just trying to get some guidance and maybe some next steps on how to put a 20-year friendship to bed and let go. Dr. John Delony: Oh, wait, wait, wait! Almost always, that's a... somebody did a thing. What happened? Caller: Oh, they definitely did a thing. It's a little bit of a doozy. Dr. John Delony: Oh, no, what happened?! What is it, man? Caller: All right, so I guess I'll give you a little bit of backstory. I have a... I mean, he's my best friend, or was, I guess I should say. Basically my brother. I mean, 20 years is a long time to have a friendship, right? Dr. John Delony: Hey, call that out! That is, A: this sounds like the beginning to a Dawson's Creek episode, I'm not gonna lie, and I'm super excited about it. Two: um, yeah, that's a brother, dude. 20 years side-by-side, that's a brother, right? Caller: Yeah, definitely. So, anyway, I met my fiancé about 5 years ago. We got engaged last year. Our wedding's actually coming up in 16 days at this point. Dr. John Delony: Very cool. Congratulations, man. Caller: Thank you. Anyway, so my best friend and my fiancé, they didn't always see eye-to-eye. You know, it was, I think, a little bit of, you know, vying for my attention at some points. You know, and so anyway, over the past few years, they have really gotten close. You know, him and his wife, we BBQ together, we hang out all the time, you know, we're... it's the crew, right? And so they finally got to a point, my fiancé and him, where, you know, they were tight, everything was going well. And he actually... him and his wife's 4-year wedding anniversary just passed, and he thought it would be cool to kind of re-propose to her because they kind of eloped the first time. And he asked me to host it at my house, you know, kind of a surprise shindig, re-proposal. And I was like, "Of course, brother, like I got you. I'll have everybody over, we'll keep it a surprise, yada yada." So, that all went fine. It was nice. They stayed over afterwards to, you know, BBQ, hang out. We were having some celebratory drinks and what have you. And I ended up... me and his wife ended up, you know, going to bed. It was late, and I'm not gonna lie... Dr. John Delony: Not together, right? Caller: Not together, no. I was gonna clarify that! Dr. John Delony: All right. Yeah, just... I held my breath there for a second. Caller: Yeah. Dr. John Delony: I was hoping you were calling to tell me how bad your friend was because you slept with his wife. Okay, good. So that didn't happen. So you and his wife went to bed separately. I feel like I know where this story is headed. Then what? Caller: Yeah. He... he made a pass at my fiancé. Dr. John Delony: What does that mean? Caller: He... tried to kiss her. Dr. John Delony: Okay. Caller: And when they were... and it... they were, you know, out, obviously, by themselves talking together, and it's funny because he... it wasn't just like a...
