Joaquin Phoenix refused to work out for Gladiator (2000). While the cast pumped iron, he chose to remain soft. He wanted Commodus to look like a pampered royal whose power came entirely from status, not physical strength.

For Gladiator (2000), Joaquin Phoenix refused to work out while the rest of the crew trained hard. When Ridley Scott heard a producer call him “fat,” Phoenix argued saying, Commodus should look like a “little fat hamster” — powerful by status, not strength.

While making GLADIATOR (2000), Joaquin Phoenix was l told that Ridley Scott thought he looked “too fat” for Commodus. Phoenix confronted: “I hear I look like a little fat hamster, but I’m the Emperor of Rome. Why shouldn’t I look a little debauched?”

Joaquin Phoenix is truly on another level. 🔥 He almost gave up on playing Commodus in Gladiator. During the first script readings, he felt so unsure of himself that he approached Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius in the film) and admitted he couldn’t capture the character’s evil nature. Harris encouraged him, reminding him that real darkness often comes from vulnerability — not power. That support helped Phoenix unlock the fragile cruelty that made Commodus so unforgettable. The performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He didn’t win the Oscar, but he won something bigger — his place among the greatest actors of his generation. 🎬

He did not choose to hide in a bunker. Knowing full well what lay ahead, he and his companions refused to compromise their principles or allow their values to be tarnished. Instead, he chose martyrdom standing firm in the face of adversity. Like Imam Hussain (A.S), he chose to fight with conviction and remain steadfast until his final breath !!

Luther Burden was asked why he went straight to Missouri’s facility to work out after falling out of the first round. He said he just wanted to work while others celebrated and plans to work out again tonight. Love this mentality.
