On January 26, 2006, Joaquin Phoenix crashed his car in the Hollywood Hills after his brakes failed. Trapped upside down, he heard knocking on the passenger window and a German voice saying, “Just relax.” Phoenix replied, “There’s the air bag, I can’t see and I’m saying, ‘I’m fine. I am relaxed.’” The man answered, “No, you’re not.” Phoenix then realized who had come to his rescue: “And suddenly I said to myself, That’s Werner Herzog! … There’s something so calming and beautiful about Werner Herzog’s voice. I felt completely fine and safe. I know it was a competitive field back in 2001, but as time passes, it’s hard to accept that Scott won zero Academy Awards despite the film’s five wins overall. Part of the relevance of this comes from the fact that this year, Scott is receiving an honorary Oscar from the The Academy. I’m happy Ridley’s finally getting his credit but come one…Scott should own a statue just for this film alone.
