First time I met John Force, he was driving for Coke at Billy Meyer’s concrete Texas Motorplex. John “Brute” Force, born John Force in 1949 in Bell Gardens, California, is a legendary figure in NHRA drag racing, renowned for his larger-than-life personality and unparalleled success in the Funny Car division. Bursting onto the professional scene in 1978 after years of grinding through lower classes, Force overcame early financial struggles and crashes to claim his first of 16 NHRA Funny Car championships in 1990. Driving iconic Castrol-sponsored Ford Mustangs for his self-founded John Force Racing team, he amassed a record 157 career victories, including 151 in Funny Car, with his most dominant era spanning the 1990s and early 2000s when he won 10 titles in 11 years from 1993 to 2003. Known for his aggressive driving style, colorful interviews, and family dynasty, daughters Ashley, Brittany, and Courtney all became champions, Force survived a horrific 2007 crash in Texas that nearly ended his career, only to return and win again in 2010 at age 61. Even into his 70s, he continued competing until a severe crash in 2024 at Virginia Motorsports Park led to his retirement announcement, cementing his status as the most decorated driver in NHRA history with over 1,000 round wins and induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame.
