John Woo on how he feels while making an action movie: "When I’m making an action movie, I don’t see it as an action movie. It’s like a painting or a poem, sometimes even like a musical. I’m aiming for that kind of feel, because I’m a dreamer. I...

John Waters on his obsession with "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) & his thoughts on the movie being considered a "Gay classic": "Interviewer: Do you remember how old you were and where you saw it? Waters: I probably saw it at the Senator Theater in Baltimore the first time, which I still have my movie premieres in. I probably saw it there and then on TV every year. But certainly I saw it at the movies as a kid. I don’t remember how old I was, and it wasn’t the first movie I saw, but it was close to it. It was a complete, complete obsession from the very, very beginning. Now, today, you have video. We couldn’t do that, so you had to wait once a year to see it. That’s that sadness about the magic of movies: you can watch it over and over, and you can rewind it, see how everything is done. Still, is there a better tornado scene? To me, all these really expensive digital effects are very uninvolving. That tornado scene is as good as 'Twister' (1996) to me, and I think it’s done with a nylon stocking Interviewer: It’s a great surrealist scene, too. Waters: And how radical—the black and white to color is almost like an LSD effect. It is a drug movie almost. (...) Interviewer: Why do you think it’s become associated with the gay community, as being a “gay classic”? Waters: See, to me, I don’t think it’s that much of a gay movie. Judy Garland is, but I don’t think so much of that movie. Of course, this is her first one, but she wasn’t tragic in that movie, except later they found out she was on diet pills when she was singing. I think it’s only a gay movie, if it is, only because of Judy Garland’s later suffering in her life and melodrama. I love Judy Garland, but did she ever marry a straight man? I don’t know. Did anyone in the family? It’s a tradition. But basically, I don’t think of it as a gay film. I know “Friends of Dorothy,” but I think it’s because of Judy Garland’s later career. Well, it might be a gay children’s movie. I don’t think it’s a gay adult’s movie. I know drag queens do the Wicked Witch, but I never saw one. It’s not a drag role." John Carpenter on how Howard Hawks's "Rio Bravo" (1959) inspired him to become a filmmaker: "As I got older I began to see that certain directors did certain things. One of the earliest examples of this was Roger Corman. I started going to see these exciting, fast, kind of cheesy but really fun monster movies, and there was one name that kept coming up on the screen: Roger Corman. 'It Conquered the World' (1956), 'Not of This Earth' (1957), 'Attack of the Crab Monsters' (1957), 'The Undead' (1957)... But | really understood for the first time what a director did when I saw 'Rio Bravo' in 1959. There was something about that movie that was like home and I can't really explain it. It was held over in Bowling Green for three or four weeks in a row because people kept coming to see it. I abandoned to see what was new in the other movie house in town to see this movie every weekend again and again because there was something in it that was different from the other westerns I had seen. I had certainly seen John Wayne before. He had become a part of my growing-up experience. He was the action guy, the cowboy. He was the guy in 'Flying Tigers' (1942) who was flying the airplanes. So what was so different about that movie? Then I became aware of this credit: “Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo.” I looked at the poster and I said to myself, “Who is this guy? He didn't write the movie and he wasn't starring in it so why is his name up here? And why is he last in the credits?” All these things started to occur to me, but it was the emotional impact of the film that got me to start using my brain. Some way I figure out that this director made that movie." ("The Prince of Darkness: The Prince of Darkness", Gilles Boulenger, 2001) P.S: Remembering the great American filmmaker Howard Hawks on his 130th birthday.

⭐️: What am I into these days? These days? These days, I kind of just… I think I’m living in a sort of "no‑thoughts" state. I don’t really have emotional ups and downs, just… I'm calm. I kind of, I don’t really know my feelings these days. It’s not like my emotions are going up and down a lot or anything, but then, when I met a friend of mine and we talked I realized I actually have more worries than I thought. But I also wonder if I just didn’t have the space to talk about them. So, on one hand... I don’t know if I have a lot of worries or if I just don’t have thoughts. With work, work is busy too but sometimes I even wonder if I’m actually busy. Because when you do so many schedules… you don’t really feel it. Like, maybe I am really busy but I just can’t feel it. No, It’s not a slump. It’s pretty far from a slump. A slump is when work doesn’t go well and doing things feels hard, but I’m not like that. When I work, it’s fun and exciting, I just don’t really have emotional highs and lows. So I wonder if maybe this is actually a good thing? That’s how it is. I don’t think you need to worry about this, but actually, I did have a lot of worries and concerns… I just didn’t realize I was worrying about them? Yeah. "Maybe it’s because you haven’t had much time to take care of yourself?" No, but I think I’m actually the type who takes care of myself pretty well. Ah, recently I’ve been going to the sauna alone pretty often and I’ve had some time to think while doing that. No, wait thinking about it, even when I go to the sauna I just sit there without thinking. I think I just space out. I wonder if it’s because I’ve gotten used to this work now. "Maybe your brain just wants to rest." That also feels right. No but, compared to before being thoughtless/empty-minded actually seems better, compared to when I had so many thoughts I couldn’t sleep. Now I sleep with my legs stretched out (idiom, it means to sleep comfortably), yes. Maybe it’s because things feel stable, yes. My relationship with the members is really good and I feel a lot of satisfaction with the work I do, and since ATINY always show me support so strongly by my side, somehow I wonder if that’s why I don’t have emotional highs and lows. #SEONGHWA #성화
