The Killer (1989) John Woo on shooting the Killer without a script. “‘The Killer,’ I even shot without a script. With no script. Just an outline, the whole movie was in my head. ….most of the action, I choreograph by myself, because I’m a pretty good dancer,” he said, “An action sequence is like I’m making a dancing scene, or I’m dancing with the actors.” Woo said he would sometimes surprise his producer by arriving at a location, very early, with only a general idea of what he needed to shoot. He described once asking for “30 stunt guys and 150 extras.” “And they were asking… Mr Woo, what’s the story about?” he recalled. “I said, ‘I don’t know.’”

John McTiernan on how he learnt moviemaking by watching 'Day for Night' (1972): "I remember when I decided that that's what I was going to do. I went about it like it was reverse engineering. I knew that I had to go and learn what a movie was, not just my experience of going and watching a movie. So I went and sat in Truffaut's Day for Night (1972), watched it for three days straight, eight hours at a time and memorized it shot-for-shot. I got past the story, all the original and secondary experience, so I could study what it was that I was really watching. Film is really sort of a chain that's really linear. Yet when it's all strung together, it just sort of feels like an experience. It takes quite a while to be able to deconstruct that experience to figure out what you really saw." (John McTiernan's interview with Alex Simon, The Hollywood Interview, 1999)

Rosamund Pike went from being a Bond girl to failing completely as an action star next to The Rock, in a movie so disastrous she was completely out of her depth. Elizabeth Day: Your second failure is your failure to be an action star, as you put it. Rosamund Pike: Oh my goodness, yeah. I mean, it started well with James Bond. But then, when I was making Pride & Prejudice, I got a call to be in the video game adaptation, Doom. I thought, "Yeah, I can do anything. I can certainly go and kill some zombies on Mars." Originally, Ray Winstone was the lead, but he was replaced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Suddenly, I’m in this film with The Rock, and I realized how utterly ill-equipped I was. The first day I met Dwayne, who couldn't be nicer, he was just a completely different beast from a 24-year-old me. He had this team of macho guys, weights on the set, and this intense, pre-take warmup routine that felt like an All Blacks Haka. I was just completely out of my depth. The film was an absolute bomb. It was a catastrophe. You do think, "Shit, is it because I wasn't hot enough?" I don't think I took that side of it seriously, or worked out for the gym body that a better female action star would have done

John Waters on his obsession with "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) & his thoughts on the movie being considered a "Gay classic": "Interviewer: Do you remember how old you were and where you saw it? Waters: I probably saw it at the Senator Theater in Baltimore the first time, which I still have my movie premieres in. I probably saw it there and then on TV every year. But certainly I saw it at the movies as a kid. I don’t remember how old I was, and it wasn’t the first movie I saw, but it was close to it. It was a complete, complete obsession from the very, very beginning. Now, today, you have video. We couldn’t do that, so you had to wait once a year to see it. That’s that sadness about the magic of movies: you can watch it over and over, and you can rewind it, see how everything is done. Still, is there a better tornado scene? To me, all these really expensive digital effects are very uninvolving. That tornado scene is as good as 'Twister' (1996) to me, and I think it’s done with a nylon stocking Interviewer: It’s a great surrealist scene, too. Waters: And how radical—the black and white to color is almost like an LSD effect. It is a drug movie almost. (...) Interviewer: Why do you think it’s become associated with the gay community, as being a “gay classic”? Waters: See, to me, I don’t think it’s that much of a gay movie. Judy Garland is, but I don’t think so much of that movie. Of course, this is her first one, but she wasn’t tragic in that movie, except later they found out she was on diet pills when she was singing. I think it’s only a gay movie, if it is, only because of Judy Garland’s later suffering in her life and melodrama. I love Judy Garland, but did she ever marry a straight man? I don’t know. Did anyone in the family? It’s a tradition. But basically, I don’t think of it as a gay film. I know “Friends of Dorothy,” but I think it’s because of Judy Garland’s later career. Well, it might be a gay children’s movie. I don’t think it’s a gay adult’s movie. I know drag queens do the Wicked Witch, but I never saw one. It’s not a drag role."
