“Traditions are experiments that worked.” Louise Perry made a sharp point on Modern Wisdom: Progressives have a huge rhetorical advantage. They can always paint a shiny utopian future that’s never existed, so they never have to defend any real-world failures or trade-offs. Conservatives, on the other hand, end up defending imperfect past cultures and traditions — and immediately get hit with “so you support domestic violence / imperialism / cholera?” As Thomas Sowell said: there are no solutions, only trade-offs. Mitch Marner says the comments he made earlier about dark times in his career were in relation to mental health, saying he believes it’s an important thing and that playing hockey can be pretty tough in a lot of ways, saying he felt in a dark hole over the last few years but is thankful for his family and teammates in Toronto for helping him with it. “There are some really dark moments, where the thought of playing hockey was playing was really tough. I just think it’s really important to always check in on your friends, your family, and the people around you. Mental health is something that’s talked about more these days, but I think it’s still overlooked in a lot of ways. I think a lot of us are addicted to social media. You see a lot of comments, and you see a lot of things about yourself. Over the last two or three years, I’ve really tried to step away from it and get off it as much as possible. This interview is very interesting as it mirrors what is going on today. In the 60s, we had protests, marxist support, free love and a rejection of God. Today we have the same and in some cases, a more extreme version of with how much it has seeped into all of culture and even into more sinister forms such as gender ideology. What makes it interesting is how Martyn describes how after the 1960s, people started to turn back to Christ after seeing the depravity of man, much like we also are seeing now. “The more man expresses himself, the worse things become. If each one of us is a god, and I determine what I think is right, and you think differently; there is a clash immediately and there is chaos.” Joan Bakewell interviews Martyn-Lloyd Jones in 1970

The students there reported that speakers were shouted down, they weren't even invited, and they weren't allowed to continue and finish their speeches. So, Harvard has an abysmal record on freedom of speech. So it's hard to believe the President of Harvard when she claims that she's standing up for freedom of speech. And if you were to apply that same standard to other groups... Imagine if representatives at that hearing had said to the President of Harvard, are you allowed to advocate for genocide of black people or trans people? I mean, would the answer have been the same? I think absolutely not. So the question is, why are Jews being treated differently than these other groups? And I think this all goes back to woke identity politics, where in the woke ideology, certain groups are victim groups, and certain groups are oppressor groups. And if you're in a victim group, you get special protections. And if you're in an oppressor group, then it's just assumed that you can't really suffer discrimination or injustice in that same way. And I think that Jews have basically been put in an oppressor group. They basically are being placed in the same group as all white people. And I think this has come as a great surprise to a lot of donors to these university campuses, who I think we're okay with woke identity politics to some degree when they believed that Jewish people were a potential victim group and that antisemitism was being treated as real. And lo and behold, they found out that no, they're an oppressor group, and they're not protected. And even very explicit cases of antisemitism are not being recognized by these universities. Because, again, it doesn't match up with this woke ideology. It would have been a lot better for a lot of these donors to realize that woke identity politics was a cul de sac. It was something that they should have wanted to avoid participating in. We all occasionally-and with age, more and more often-look back on our childhood. For some, it was happier; for others, it was not as bright. Yet, everyone can recall something in a moment of sadness, while reflecting in solitude, or finding peace in nature. Many children in Ukraine will remember their childhood as a series of upheavals that caught up with them far too soon; for their fragile psyche, it is an unbearable burden. They are left with too many questions: "Why us? Why now? And why did the russians come here and hate us so much?" There will be too many of these "Mom, why," and the answers will only come with age. How do you explain to a child what "war" is? Something that they previously saw only in movies as a form of entertainment, viewed from the safety and comfort of home, has suddenly appeared right outside their window. Explosions sound ever clearer, closer to home, and there is no point in replacing the windows anymore-they are destroyed too often. A child simply packs their small suitcase, packing away their childhood, and along with it, the memories of the years they have lived. The situation is similar for elderly Ukrainians, although they certainly have more answers than children do. Yet, our elderly parents, in their advanced age, become like children themselves; they require our attention, care, and words of love.
