The engine is the reason there are mods for these games with tons of new assets and full quests longer then the base game.

to be fair, hes talking about gamebryo and GECK, not c1-3 and the creation kit BUT, the creation kit is as awesome as GECK and what he says about content delivery probably still rings true with c3, however: this makes BGS awful release schedule all the more confounding lmfao

Easily my favourite game director man he’s so fucking cool

It's true, I've fumbled around with it and learned on my own how to re-route textures, models, and how to make simple interior cells, npcs, etc. Even just fucking around is easy. Legit with some genuine patchwork it could be actual magic.

I feel like bungie & 343 have an engine that is exactly the opposite of this

And yet its 15 years between games for some reason.

People will demonize Creation Engine as if it's impossible for it to get smoothed out and that Starfield wasn't leagues better than 4 and skyrim in terms of stability. And bethesda's worked to refine it even more so who knows. It's a mess, sure. But it works.

Out of all the problems about modern BGS games, the engine isn't really that bad. Like what Josh said, it's very easy for creating content for the game. Look at all the content modders have made for those games, not only quests but whole new gameplay mechanics and that.

as a modder, I believe everything he said I also find Creation Engine to be one of the easiest game engines to learn and to use I've ever made anything for, but the its fast argument kinda falls apart when you realize bethesda has taken 7 years not 18 months to ship the next game

I remember at the time, New Vegas was UNPLAYABLE on the PS3. It would crash the whole console within two hours of starting a new game. The most unplayable game I've ever experienced for specific console.

We aren’t getting games in 18 months anymore though are we

All this hate is from Youtubers making garbage video esssays for a few cents at the end of the month and milking the minority who hate bethesda since skyrim to validate their hate abd what followed is others who yse ragebait to feed off all of that.

He's right, but it's hard not to notice the obvious double standard, he spends an enormous amount of time glazing the engine and spends 2 seconds saying "It's buggy, it's unstable" and starts glazing again, instead of actually explaining what makes the engine have that duality.

Bookmarking this. Anyone else cries out that bethesda/obsidian should use unreal 5 over creation I'll send them this. Creation engine deserves a lot of criticism but its also the reason why these games stick to our memory. The avowed vs oblivion/Skyrim videos are proof enough

well okay, make another game in 18 months instead of 5+ years

I've been making mods for morrowind, oblivion, and skyrim for years and you can legitimately make an entire game from the creation kit alone

The creation engine looks quite good, honestly with the high praise that most developers give the engine, it obviously has its flaws, but that can be addressed, it would be better if we see a new version of the engine with refined tooling then a movement to a new engine.

You know he's talking about the Gamebryo Engine and not the BGS right?

Of course its easy. Bethesda bases their business model on forcing the community to fixing their fuckups and stealing ideas from modders

Is this recent? Because if he's replaying the game before starting work on the newest one, that is like. S tier mindset already.

The thing is, Bethesda can iron out those bugs and they can have no trade offs, and I’m sure that CE3 will be just that, especially with that Microsoft money they can invest in actually improving their engine

Sawyer the god... not made a bad game that he has been Lead Director or Lead Designer on. Icewind Dale, NWN2, Fallout new Vegas, Pillars Of Eternity 1/2 & Pentiment, all awesome.

If you wanna use that mess then so be it but you gotta quadruple the time spent bug fixing it or put quadruple the amount of people working on the bug fixes. Heck there’s still bugs the modding community haven’t fixed to this day.

the amazing modding for the game, the engine is so malleable you basically have an open canvas, that's what's amazing of Bethesda games and why we keep coming back to them years later

Profilbild von MR3D-Dev
MR3D-Devvor 3 Monaten

While I agree. I believe the engine has reached a limit of what it can do and from what I hear it can no longer be improved hence why Starfield is what it is. If games would stay the size of Fallout 4 its ok, but if Bethesda wants their games to be bigger the creation engine is certainly a limit

@TKsMantis If it’s so easy to make content for why does it take Bethesda so long to make content?

I have to wonder how easy. Easier than unreal was? I have to imagine they must’ve had meetings over the years discussing “yeah CE is buggy but it’s so easy to train someone and make content on” vs “we switch to unreal and pay the fee but almost every dev is trained on unreal”

Profilbild von Capo

Not talking about the creation engine, but even if he was, two things can be true at once. Great creation pipeline as seen by modding capabilities, but still a bad foundation for stability and performance. It is virtually impossible to play vanilla new vegas on 2020s hardware
